The original lens for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, long thought lost to war or thieves, has been found in a climate-controlled storage building on Roanoke Island.

The 6,000-pound Fresnel lens is made up of 1,000 pieces of precision glass prisms. Lighthouse lantern rooms using Fresnel lenses captured and concentrated light from the prisms and bounced it through a panel, making the beam blink.

"Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, which is expected to be completed in Hatteras by 2004."

That oughtta be really cool...I've been visiting the Outer Banks at least once a year since '81 and have read a book or two about all the ships that ran aground there over the years. Very interesting history and someday I'd like to upgrade my scuba license to allow me to go inside some of the many wrecks that dot the waters around the OBX.

I've been going there since I was a little boy...
There are some amazing wrecks there from what I have heard (including a couple U-Boats).

PBS had a running series on Lighthouses of the US and it was extremely entertaining and well done-probably available commercially now. They devoted some time to the Fresnel lens-glad to see that a part of history has been recovered intact.

Thanks for the flag... I've been getting back slowly from a bare-metal recovery over the weekend- and I have to step out in a minute to fetch my wife... I'll get back here later, I hope!

I guess I am a pharologist, but didn't realize it.
My license plate looks like this, so I suppose I am!

Oh, that silly old glassy thing-a-ma-jiggy out in the barn? I was wundering where that came from. Why didn't they just ask? I coulda told 'em where it was! Almost sold it at my yard sale last month but no one could lift it. Had to take them little glass pieces away from the kids, they almost burned down the house trying to fry bugs!....

Thanks for the ping.
