One of the greatest centers on the greatest football team of all time has passed away.

Quite a sad tale after he left football, though.

I had the opportunity to meet Mike Webster in 1983. He was friendly, gracious, and had, next to Andre the Giant, the biggest hands of anyone I have ever met. He had no wrists. His hands went directly to his forearms.

My prayers are with him and his family.

They are drafting a pretty good football team, 1st Johnny Hightops, and now they have a center.

on the greatest football team of all time ...

When you're right you're right, no disputing that point. Bradshaw, Swan, Mean Joe Green, Franco, Webster.

Gosh what a team that was, especially to an 11 year old.

The average former NFL player dies in his mid fifties.

He was one of the best centers ever. It's sad to see his life end so young and apparently beleaguered by problems.

That's very sad but, it wasn't like he was one of the Browns or anything :-)>

Anyway, I hope he came to know the Lord

This is sad. Much too young. My condolences to his family.

The Steelers of the 70's were the greatest football dynasty of all time. And Mike Websters hand's were all over it.

So true. Why doesn't the NFL address this? Of course, how much of that fact can be directly attributed to steroid use? But I think it also has to do with the fact that former players don't adjust their diet after their playing days.

I remember doing wrist and bicep curls in high school and college and saying I wanted to be like him. Once I became a center in high school, he was immediately my football role model.

I guess I died a litte bit this morning too. God bless him.

Yeah, what a bummer. I remember dressing in black and gold in 7th grade on the days leading up to the play-offs. All of Western PA just went nuts every January....

And Rocky Blier, John Stallworth, the rest of the Steel Curtain, etc.etc.

Those were great days in football.

Bum Phillips(coach for the Houston Oilers) was right when he said, "The road to the Superbowl goes through Pittsburgh."

I could swear I just read an interview this past week with his son who moved to Western PA to play high school ball from Wisconson. Now I can't find it. He said his dad was in pretty bad shape. The son is 6'9" and has a few problems of his own, it sounded like. Wonder where the kid will go now?
