Reno/Tahoe International Airport plans to remove its smoking rooms, leaving some passengers fuming because they won’t have a place to light up once they pass security checkpoints.
Officials planned to make the airport smoke-free in 1992 but built two enclosed smoking rooms instead after protests from smokers, sympathetic non-smokers and tourism officials.

And everyone wonders why all the AIR RAGE!
And aside from 9-11, if planes still had their smoking sections, their business would not have dropped so drastically. Perhaps the airlines should bring back the smoking sections to entice more passengers? Just a thought, of course.

Does this mean that they have banned NOT SMOKING? Or that there is not any ban in place at all?

"Its discriminatory and its ridiculous, especially since they are doing it to sell more overpriced paperbacks and travel pillows." Bump.

just spoke with a gal at the Airport Authority. There will be two smoking areas beyond security, at the bars on both concourses and Brew Brothers, before security. Three areas total.
Looks like Frank X. Mullen Jr. screwed up, again.

Let's start a list of smoker friendly airports.
Tulsa (2 year old info, room inside gate area)
Denver (again 2 year old experience, upstairs in lounge)
Chicago (If you walk outside)

To: McGruff
There's noplace at LAX past security except one little outdoor garden in one of the commuter terminals...and in Sydney, Australia - at least in the 'transit area' which is amazingly huge - there is absolutely nowhere to go have a puff....I went to the Qantas Club after the 15 hour flight from Los Angeles and was told "sorry", but tipped (and given a terminal map) that if I went way to the other end of the concourse where no flights were coming or going for another 4 hours, I'd be "safe" (since getting caught smoking there is an instant fine, payable on the spot if you're traveling); it worked and I got my fix to get me over to Perth. You would, however, think that someplace so large would have at least one teenie-weenie patio.
To: thepainster
I am a non smoker, but this is rediculus! When will the madness stop! It IS madness. What with all the world turmoil, the Nico-Nazi's can't see beyond stopping adults from enjoying a legal commodity. I know it's nuts!
They have their teeth so deep into smokers that they can't see straight. They have made it their lifes work to see that smoking is ended YESTERDAY. Well, sorry. I guess they want to just shoot us or put us in prison.

And they think this is going to increase traffic...... they are nuts. The airlines are in dire straights. You would think they would bring back the smoking sections to entice more travelers. But oh no! They aren't that smart.

#9...We really should get serious about smoke-unfriendly places, be they City, States, airports or whatever.
To: SheLion
Poor babies. They look so cute walled inside their little glass houses. The economics are working against those whose habits create such a stench.
Now they are going to spend exra money and time criss-crossing the US just so they can have a cig. What devotion.
To: SheLion
Several times I returned home on leave, from serving our country overseas in various police actions or peacekeeping duties, to find that in this supposedly free country Chicago O'hare has banned smoking entirely, necessitating my leaving the airport to smoke, and return through "security" everytime. (We all know now know how well that worked)
PC is literally killing us.
To: SheLion
It's those controlling twits again...
If it were simply a matter of creating revenue, I know that most smokers would be willing to pay for the use of their "smoke room".
What are the odds that this alternative was even examined?
To: SheLion
We dont want to inconvenience any passengers, said Adam Mayberry, airport spokesman. We need to increase revenue to sustain air service and operations. Then why in heaven's name do these people insist on doing something that will further add to the inconvenience of ALL passengers?
The fact that some people can't see beyond their noses, let alone the politically correct BS of the anti-smokers is totally beyond me.

PC is literally killing us. It would be different if tobacco was illegal. But it's a legal commodity that the lawmakers have jumped on to cure all their ills. If it's so darn bad for us, why don't they ban it, instead of counting on us to "balance their budgets," all the while they ban and restrict us everywhere. Make sense to you? Sure doesn't make sense to me.

What are the odds that this alternative was even examined? They don't! The lawmakers and the City Councils go behind closed doors and see how miserable they can make it for smokers. All the while, they have their paws deep in our pockets to help bail their budgets out.
I, for one, am tired of carrying their loads, while they dump all over us! I think they owe us for all the back taxes that were imposed on the people who "pay" cigarette taxes!

Being an ex-smoker himself, he has no credibility in attacking current smokers. All his vitriol and bitterness come from trying to convince himself he doesn't want a smoke.
His issue is with himself, far more than it is with us.

To: SheLion
Whatever happened to the idea of expecting adults to accept the consequences of their lifestyle choices? If that includes having to forego their chosen chemical for a few hours, then so be it. Granted the tobacco industry never offered classes on the results of nicotine addiction so as to allow potential consumers the knowledge necessary for informed consent, but people have been calling their products addictive and dangerous for decades now.
To: Cultural Jihad
When I was growing up, smoking was a "habit." We knew, even back then, that smoking wasnt' good for us. Just like we know that too many "fat fries" today, isn't good for us.
If smoking is so BAD for us, why has it been around and LEGAL for hundreds of years? Why all of a sudden, do we have all these Anti Smoking Groups making big bucks, to put an end to a legal commodity that 55 million Americans enjoy? Why? Can anyone answer my question?
And if the Anti Smoking Health Fascists succeed in taking away something we enjoy in this life, will they come after you next? You can bet they will.
These groups are trying to beat us into submission. Is this the ground to which America was founded? I don't think so.
It seems to me that something else has moved into America and is working underground to undermine us all.

and in Sydney, Australia There is a small (10'x12') smoking room past security on the concourse that UAL uses at SYD. At least there was in January.
To: ecurbh
Does this mean that they have banned NOT SMOKING? Or that there is not any ban in place at all? Reminds me of a sign in Reagan National Airport which stated that "State Law requires alcholic beverages be consumed in this area". They have removed it since then.
To: SheLion
Perhaps the airlines should bring back the smoking sections to entice more passengers? How does a smoking section "entice more passengers" to travel?
That would indicate an admission, cigarette's control smoker's lives...You aren't suggesting that's the case are you?
To: SheLion
I thought of a solution. We separate the smokers from the non-smokers. The smokers can take the odd numbered replies and the nonsmokers can take the even numbered replies. Later we can limit the smokers to the prime numbers.
To: SheLion
Get us an email for the airport so we can write them nasty notes. Why don't they set up a smoking slot-machine room or something to raise revenues?

I've flown exactly once since 9/11. Since security checkpoints take so long now, I wasn't able to go outside and smoke like I used to do, and not even bars in airports have smoking areas anymore, so I ended up sneaking a smoke in the bathroom. I felt like I was back in high school!

To: SheLion
I'm a former smoker that still gets fumed over the stupid restrictions on cigs and places like airports that won't provide a place for smokers to smoke.
But, I did quit and if you are thinking about it, here is my suggestion.

- A credit-card sized computer that creates a personalized gradual withdrawal program based on individual smoking habits
- Combines advanced computer technology with behavior science principles
- Patented and scientifically proven method to quit smoking
- Over 1.25 million units sold world-wide
One of those 1.25 million units was sold to me and it worked. This is a great system. Here is what is great about it.
1. For the first three days you get to smoke normally. All you have to do is push a button every time you smoke a cig.
2. On the day you are to quit, you wake up in the morning, turn on the little computer thing and it says...Have a cigarette! My kinda program.
3. It then starts to tic down the time and you have a cigarette when it tells you to. For the first three days, that is the same time you would have had one anyhow (remember, you programmed it with your smoking habbits for three days).
4. Then gradully it starts to change your smoking pattern. In my case, less in the morning and actually more than I would have normally smoked in the afternoon (at times even when I did not really want a cig).
5. Finally, the time stretches out between cigs. Eventually, it got to the point that I got dizzy off them like the first time I smoked - Time to quit and I did.
I don't sell the thing. But it is really the darn easiest way to quit and actually kind of fun. Link Here for the web page

Thanks so much! But I still reserve my right to smoke a legal product and enjoy it as much as I can. Smoking is me.
But I will pass on your kind words to others who might wish to stop smoking. Thanks again!
