September 27, 2002 -- SENATE Majority Leader Tom Daschle just made American politics a lot more interesting with his fascinating floor speech Wednesday, during which he demanded an apology from President Bush for saying Democrats didn't care about national security.

"We ought not politicize this war," said Daschle.

Here's my admittedly simplistic contribution to the why-did-Daschle-do-it debate: Tom Daschle got up Wednesday morning, read the Washington Post . . . and totally lost it.

According to Michael Kelly on Imus yesterday, he is also trying to 'check' albore in the lib fund-raising department.

I think he fears being squeezed out of the dem nominating process before it gets started. Maybe he keeps getting a whiff of hilary's pants suit.

Yeah... its not like President Bush and Vice President Cheney stepped over the line. Tommy Daschund thinks by the looks of it, that a GOP Administration's mission in life is help get Democrats elected to office. LMAO!

Yeah, going off on a tirade based on third hand information from a left wing news source that "spins' their quotes to begin with. Not very bright, li'l Tommy. Next time, check the facts first. It'll save you a lot of anguish.

Cheney should be demanding an apology... That would be funny.

Tiny Tommy comes across as a twerp who got his feelings hurt by the bully Bush. What a poor excuse of a girlie man he is. I would be ashamed if I hailed from S. Dakota that this wuss represents a leader...

This is a vital reason why we simply MUST hand over all the power to the Republicans. Once this is done, the President can stop pandering to the 'rats to get his nominations approved and become the leader we voted for.
This is nothing bad about the other independant parties; some of them have good ideas. But, votes for them means more votes AWAY from Republicans TOWARD the 'rats. We MUST be united this November. President Bush's hands have been tied too long.

South Dakota: John Thune, current Congressman, (articulate, affable, attractive in an August debate with Johnson) running against Tim Johnson, current Senator.

New Jersey: Doug Forrester (bio: former assistant state treasurer, now small businessman and university instructor) is running against Senator Robert Torricelli, who got a reprimand from the Senate Ethics Committee and may be vulnerable.

New Hampshire: U.S. Representative John Sununu, son of former Governor, defeated current Senator Bob Smith in the September 10th primary and faces current Democrat governor, Jean Shaneen, in the general election for Senator. Sununu has less than two months to knit the party back together for the general election to retain the seat against a tough opponent, who probably would have defeated Smith.

Missouri: Jim Talent, former Congressman from St. Louis, against current Senator Jean Carnahan (who was appointed when her dead husband narrowly "won" in 2000 election over John Ashcroft). There is talk that if Talent wins he may be allowed to take the seat immediately.

Colorado: Current Senator, Wayne Allard, a veterinarian, is facing stiff competition from former U.S. Attorney and environmentalist, Tom Strickland. The Libertarian candidate, businessman Rick Stanley, may draw away enough votes from Allard to cause a loss.

Iowa: U.S. Representative Greg Ganske is challenging current Senator Tom Harkin. Although behind in last poll, Ganske may gain ground with the shifting of the national debate to Iraq, and the recent scandal of Harkin people spying on the Ganske campaign.

What you have precisely stated is my thought as well.

Pull out all the stops, we have nothing to lose, lie, lie, lie.

According to Doug Thompson in Capitol Hill Blue, Daschle's breakdown was preceded by more than 24 hours of consultations with advisers. That means the consultations started well before the appearance of Milbank's article. I think Milbank wrote his article in the deceptive way he did because the Dems asked the Washington Post to do it.
