Mother Charged After Shooting Son With BB Gun
Woman Wanted Son Out Of Tree
Posted: 7:47 a.m. EDT September 27, 2002

PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- A woman tried to force her 10-year-old son out of a magnolia tree by shooting the boy with a BB gun, police said. Tanya Collins was charged Wednesday with child abuse for the incident, which left a mark on her son's forearm, according to a Pasco County sheriff's report.

The 29-year-old mother of four was released from jail Wednesday after posting $2,500 bail.

Tanya Collins said her son, Casey, scrabbled up a 25-foot tree on Aug. 14 after she told him they were going to the store for milk and bread.

Casey, a fifth-grader, said he feared they were really headed for his mother's fiance, whom he doesn't like.

Collins went back inside the house, grabbed the BB gun and aimed it at Casey, she told police.

"She tried scaring me with the BB gun, but I jumped in the way of the BB and got shot,'' her son, Casey Collins, said Thursday.

Sheriff's officials said they learned of the incident from an anonymous call to the child abuse hot line. Child protection investigators, who determine whether a child should be taken into foster care, were still investigating, sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said.

I'd be up that tree too. It'd be the tallest one on the block.

I tried that trick once. My mom left me up there and started emptying my room of all my stuff onto the front lawn. Then after I came down (I was getting hungry) I got the belt!

...and I'm a better person today because of it.

This is extremely important news for the peepshow voyeur tongue-clucking crowd. If Diane Sawyer picks it up they will be in an uproar for days.

Why do I think the tree was next to a single-wide?

kj

I'm being silly. This family has problems. I'm being silly, but I think I'm probably right.

What should she have done?

Her son won't listen to her.
He's up in the tree.
She wants to leave to go shopping (or visit her fiance).

If she leaves him at home, Child Protection Services can get involved.
If she calls the police for help, Child Protection Services can get involved.
If she calls her fiance for help, he can be arrested and Child Protective Services can get involved.

She chose to scare him out of the tree. She did not intend to shoot him. The boy said "I jumped in the way of the BB and got shot".

"She tried scaring me with the BB gun, but I jumped in the way of the BB and got shot,''

sounds like he finally decided to mind his mama...but it was too late

She should have used something bigger if she really wanted him down fast.

Well then I have a Drill SGT I want arrested. We spent a couple of days shooting each other with BB guns and some of the company were only seven years older than this kid.

A mark on the arm from a BB gun sounds like nothing, especially if he jumped in the way of it. But... what is the fiance like? (That's what I want to know). Maybe this kid had a reason not to want to visit him if that's where they were really going, as he suspected.

That's what I'm thinking. Just how bad is this fiance if the kid climbs a tree not to go? Of course, I don't take the kid's side necessarily either. Children should mind their parents

There seems to be more to this story. Depending on what, the kid may have had alot of sense getting away from a bad situation.

Doesn't she know you can put an eye out with those things?

Reminds me of hunting sage chickens with a neighbor once. His bird dawg took out chasing a jack rabbit. You got it - he reared back and let the hound have it. A load of birdshot (about 6's or maybe 7 1/2) at a little over 100 feet or so got his attention real fast.

Family services won't be getting involved because she shot him but because she bought him the BB gun in the first place.

Yep - child services to the rescue. A woman in my daughter's ice-skating rink told her daughter to get off the ice because it was time to go home. When the daughter didn't comply the mother waited by one of the ice exits and as her daughter skated by (too close to the wall) the mother yanked her off the floor forcefully. Of course the daughter started to cry (she was 9).

At about 11:30 PM the CPS showed up on her front door and said they had to see the kids. She had to wake up all three of her children and present them to CPS for examination of physical abuse. Some 'well meaning' parent at the ice rink reported her for child abuse.

Chance33_93 - articles liket his enfuriate me. There would have been a time in American history when a story like this would have been told as a piece of Americana. Our sophistication in dealing with 'social problems' is slowly twisting us into a police state. ARGH!

My daughter REFUSED to put her pants on the other day at the church nursery. She somehow managed to escape and run around with no pants on while adults were trying to corral her in the gymnasium. She eventually put her pants on - but my first thought was not what the pants had done to her. She was just being stubborn. Kids can be like that for the oddest reasons.

A prime example of "I let them get away with murder at home" and then they wonder why they won't obey them when they want to go somewhere.
