Castro was not well liked. There was little home support for him. His military was poorly motivated and looking for opportunity to quit. An display of support for the invasion would have been a source of security for those in Castro's military to disobey Castro. The invasion forces were concentrated on the beach and needed a breakout point as well as an intimidating display of support. Any air support would have turned the battle.

That was the JFK groupthink prior to the invasion, yes.
They then reneged. Why?
