LatelineNews: 2002-9-28] SINGAPORE - Most Asians in government and business oppose a possible U.S. military attack on Iraq, according to a poll reported in the Straits Times on Sunday.
The poll of 97 officials, lawmakers, diplomats, experts and businessmen conducted over the last two weeks shows 69% of respondents oppose a U.S. plan to launch a war to topple the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the daily said.
Most are not convinced there is enough reason for the United States to attack and fear the move will have an adverse effect on Asia's fragile economic recovery, it added.
Less than a third believe the Iraqi leader is currently a threat to global stability, and some 73% said a war would have a negative impact on Asian economies.
Almost half said anti-American sentiments in Asia are rising because of Washington's unilateral moves, including its insistence on attacking Iraq. The views indicate sentiments in Asia largely reflect those in Europe and the Middle East.
The daily conducted the poll through its bureaus in Beijing, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.
However, the poll also shows Asians could change their mind on an attack if there is irrefutable evidence that Iraq was developing biological weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, or actively supporting terrorists.
Many said any U.S. action against Iraq should be sanctioned by the United Nations.
''Many Muslims all over the world will be up in arms. Local allies everywhere, particularly those with Muslim populations, will be hard-pressed to contain anti-American sentiments,'' the paper quoted Andrew Tan of Singapore's Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies as saying.
''The U.S. must get its grand strategy in the war against international terrorism right,'' he added.

Asahi Shimbun is focused more on the issue of North Korea.
The Japan Times Online has no stories on Iraq, mostly stories on the economy and North Korean investigations (NorKor abducted Japanese citizens in the 70's and 80's).
I wonder who they're polling...

<< Most ..... in Peking, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta ..... fear the move will have an adverse effect on Asia's fragile economic recovery .... >>
Not as adverse an effect as that caused by the continued serial looting conducted by the petty and other thieving, lying, looting gangster dictators in every one of those squalid states and cities -- whose serial looting and universal corruption caused the so-called Asian financial collapse in the first place.
Or: "Who cares what they say they "think?"

Who cares what anyone thinks of what our President has decided? He has more intel than anyone else on the planet; and he's shared it with Tony B. since the Brits are our only trusted ally. As far as I'm concerned, I'd tell the foreigners to get out, or you'll be put on barges and sent out to sea.

I forgot to add. Who asked these people what they think? Do they pay taxes?

Did they also ask them whether we should be using the BCS for NCAA football rankings? Who gives a crap what they think.

Iraq at the present time is a threat to the United States and the rest of the Free
World! Iraq cannot be allowed to develope or possess weapons of mass
destruction. Sadam Hussein has used weapons of mass destruction on his own
people as well as having used them during Iraq's war with Iran(It's being looked
into if he used them against Our troops during the Gulf War). I would not be
surprised if Hussein's regime backed the attack on New York and Washington on
9/11!!!! To allow Hussein's Regime to aquire(if he has'nt already) Nuclear
weapons or transfer weapons of mass destruction technology to Terrorist entities
would be Disastrous!!!! Hussein and his Bathe Party are very Brutal(with proven
Deadliness) to Iraq's own people. Don't believe the Democrats party line that War
with Iraq is not part of the War On Terror!!!! Eliminating Hussein and his Bathe
Party and replacing it with a Free and Democratic Government helpful to the Iraqi
people as well as the rest of the world will be a BIG VICTORY in the WAR ON
TERROR!!!! The War On Terror and Eliminating Hussein is one and the same!!!!
Hussein and his Bathe party are a proven terrorist(against Kuwait as well as his
own people) that must be eliminated!!!!

Beijing and Jakarta inked a contract Sept. 26 to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Tangguh field in Indonesia's West Papua province to China's Fujian province. The deal, signed during the first Indonesia-China Energy Forum in Bali, is valued by Jakarta at $8.5 billion. The two countries also signed at least six other memoranda of understanding covering hundreds of millions of dollars in oil, mining and power-sector dealsBeyond the energy sector, Indonesia and Beijing also are trying to expand political and military ties. In the past month, Li Peng, chairman of China's National People's Congress, and Defense Minister Chi Haotian both have visited Jakarta. During Chi's visit, the two nations began discussions about possible Chinese arms sales to Indonesia, and Indonesian officials welcomed the idea as a way to diversify their suppliers and reduce the problems caused by international sanctions.
