So why don't the Republicans ask Rudy Guiliani to move to New Jersey and put HIS name on the ballot?

Now that there is seemingly precedent for that sort of thing.

Great idea, except that the Republicans believe in the rule of law. If they did that, then the Democrats would always point back to it ad nauseum.

How about: because it would be an obvious sham? If you think the Dems looks bad substituting Lousenberg, the Republicans would look worse dumping Forrester now, and every newspaper with a circulation of more than 1000 would keep reminding their readers about the shameless Republicans. Get serious.

How can it be an obvious sham?

The NJ Superme Court just ruled it is as kosher as can be.

How, I ask, can we deny the voters a chance to vote for one of the most beloved figures in America? A man who led both NY'ers and NewJerseyites through the dark days of September 11? If anything, it would be a SHAM to deny the voters this chance.

Who says he can't run as a Senator from NJ. After all his opponent will probably be a the Senator from NY (herself a proud carpetbagger).

Great. It gets him out of New York.

Why would he have to move to New Jersey? He just lives across the river from there now. It's very close. Under New Jersey law, wouldn't that be close enough? Why split hairs over a mile or less? The right of the people of New Jersey to vote for a popular guy like Rudy should take precedence over some dumb rule about a minor geographic detail.

Why not let him do both?

Are we still so provincial, so tied into obviously outmoded election laws that we think we can't have the same person represent NJ as a Senator and California as a Governor?

I like to think we are more progressive than that.

See, another person gets it.

After Mayor Of NYC, a Senate job would be boring. And after steering the city through the aftermath of last September, why settle for the mundaneness of being a Senator.

After all, name the last Senator who won the Presidency? JFK, Johnson...

I was surprised they didn't put Gore in there. Maybe they have other plans for him.

Of course, didn't even take his own state in the 2000 election, so I doubt they are running him there.

Is there a close race in, I dunno, Vermont that I don't know about?

And before JFK, i don't know.

In the modern era, the Senate seems to be the capstone of a career, not a springboard to the presidency.

Didn't LIEberman run for Senator and V.P. at the same time?
