I highly recommend Dr. Sowell's Basic Economics.

Dr. Sowell's latest "Race and IQ" column refers to lowering standards in college admissions in order to achieve a "critical mass" of black students so that they will feel comfortable enough in the college environment in order to achieve.

He says that the opposite is true - that anti-achievement peer pressure takes over and the brightest students under achieve.

He sites studies that show that immersing bright students with other bright students is the best way to get the highest achievement out of the best students, regardless of background.

This gives me an idea for an end run around the NEA/Democrap litany of "More Taxes, Higher Salaries! More Taxes, Higher Salaries!". Perhaps W could get the teachers and administrators of these successful minority schools, and talk to them at length on TV about what they attribute their success to. It will take numerous appearances. If he beats on this drum long enough, it will start to penetrate the sheeples minds that lack of money is not the problem (because they will then be able to hold that belief while still feeling virtuous because they have minority figures to admire and idolize). This in turn would open the door to accountability programs for schools and perhaps the eventual withdrawl of the Feds from education regulation and funding.

A number of black schools, even in rundown ghettos, have already reached or exceeded national norms on tests, so there is no question that it can be done.

There is an all-black high school in a run-down area of Philadelphia that consistently fields one of the top high school chess teams in the United States. I'm sure the people in that school stopped making excuses for their students years ago.

Dr. Thomas Sowell has published part three of his series on race and intelligence. A lot of folks are not going to be happy with his conclusions, but as he states in today's part three:

"...it is time for black "leaders" and white "friends" to stop trying to discredit the tests and get on with the job of improving the skills that the tests measure."

Many so-called black "leaders" insist that studies like Dr. Sowell's are counter-productive, simply because it validates positions taken in controversial works like "The Bell Curve."

I have to agree with Dr. Sowell: let's get over it and get on with it.

Which school is that? Masterman? (Not sure of the spelling). If so, only the top students in the Philadelphia school system are admitted. That's why it does so well across the board. In fact, I married a former student. (Of course, he's not as smart as he thinks he is, and I hope he reads that, too. Just kidding).
