LEWISTON, Maine (AP) A letter by Mayor Larry Raymond aimed at slowing the influx of Somalis to Maine's second-largest city has sparked confusion and resentment among members of the immigrant community.
An estimated 1,060 Somalis have moved to Lewiston from elsewhere in the United State over the last 20 months, according to one city official.

I am all for helping people when they are our own. But we are paying for these immigrants to be on welfare! I am against this! Baldacci, Allen and the Catholic Church are responsible for this.
One Somali woman was living in Atlanta and was paying “$900 dollars a month” for her housing. One of her friends in Maine told her to move up here! Housing is CHEAP!
She did. Now she is paying $75 dollars a month for a 4 bedroom, two bath house. A lot of Mainers would LOVE living like this.

I was in Maine a couple weeks ago. The local paper said that these people would not take jobs according to businesses. The Somalis stated they were available for work between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. The local business leaders (and the paper printed it) said these people were satisfied with the Gov't assistance - and they didn't want to jeopardize the assistance by taking a job.

In a three-page letter Raymond wrote, ''This large number of new arrivals cannot continue without negative results for all. The Somali community must exercise some discipline and reduce the stress on our limited finances and our generosity.'' This guy actually said this? I'm dumbfounded. He's gonna get fired for sure. And hey, when he does, send him down this way. Maybe he could stir up the same stink sitting on the Tucson City Council, the dweebs who want to DOUBLE their salaries on the ballot next year. Yeah, you Mainahs, send that boy over this way!
