You must have forgotten the part where Simon said that Davis spends all his time attacking him because he doesn't have a decent record to run on. And Davis said sheepishly "I do too have a record" - it was quite funny. Davis reminded me of Algore. Mean, defensive and unlikable.

The only thing Simon might do for conservatives is prove an unknown conservative can't un-seat a hated liberal who has name recognition in California.
I can't tell you how frustrating for me and many I know this race has been.
From what you told me, I feel this was a lose-lose situation from the start then.
Riordan was bad you say and Simon seems near unelectable. Boy, we are in trouble in CA folks!
Our State Legislature is full of Democrats as well, that control a thiefdom of their making.
To: dalereed
Well, you are the only one happy here, because I think as of now, Davis is ahead by quite a bit. But at least Davis is NOT Riordan.
To: evilsmoker
Mean, defensive and unlikable. And he doesn't know how to dress himself.

PS: God Bless your 40 years of voting. I think that is great.
To: Hildy
I pray to God there is a whole generation like him who will do that. The are needed big-time this election.

Davis also did not defend the will of the people proposition 187. He let it die in court without a defense.
First time a Gov. ever did that to my knowledge. His job was to defend 187 by law I think.

Watching my videotape of the debate now...
Simon opens with zinger after zinger on Gray Devious. Gray Devious, you owe the people of California an apology. :-)
To: Gophack
I don't get that impression from people all around me.
Try (if lucky) Davis by only 8.
Simon needs to get noticed. That and that alone will get him elected now.
He needs to maybe go dive out of a plane for the press.
SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't care if he lights his farts with a match for the press, get out there so people know who is running against Davis.
Gray Devious' opener: "Simon is a true blue think-tank conservative. He is the son of the first family of the far right of this country."
California's economy 7th to 5th largest of the world...WRONG!!!
To: A CA Guy
Simon is all over the state talking to people, campaigning, going on radio, and pounding the pavement. The press doesn't report it, true, but people are not as focused on the press has in past elections.
I know many of my stories are antidotal, but consider this:
1) I was walking precincts last week in my neighborhood and a double DEMOCRAT black middle class household said they were NOT voting for Davis.
2) At a local fair this weekend, the Republican booth registered 70 Republican voters and distributed 50 Simon signs -- all that they had. There was no Democrat presence AT ALL.
3) I live in Sacramento County, a government area, and have seen only ONE Davis bumper sticker, and it was parked at the Capitol. In fact, I have seen more Gore-Lieberman bumper stickers this week than Davis stickers!
4) All of the sudden, I have seen Simon stickers popping up everywhere. On Saturday, I was driving home from the gym and the car in front of me had a Simon sticker and a car passed me with a Simon sticker.
5) Simon has just beefed up his television buy. I have actually for the first time saw more Simon commercials this weekend than Davis commercials ... and I watch very little t.v.
6) My neighbor, a Republican apolitical stay-at-home mom says that everyone she talks to says, "I'm voting for Simon, but I don't know anyone else who is." She said that 6 or 7 people said that to her last week alone (people at the gym, her mom's club, etc.)
7) An apolitical decline-to-state friend of mine told me this morning that she went to visit a friend up north (of Sacramento) and saw at least a dozen Simon stickers and no Davis stickers.
While these are just little stories, I think other FReepers have them as well.
What gets me about your comments is that you think Riordan could beat Davis, and I'm telling you, Riordan has far more baggage than Simon and would have pissed everyone off. Simon is not a career politician, and that may have given him the rocky start as he was finding his sea legs, but now that he has them -- WOW! I think he's doing GREAT!
Go Simon!

He is the son of the first family of the far right of this countryWell, I agree that the Simon family led by his father was a pillar in the conservative movement, but I wouldn't say they were the "first family of the far right" -- I don't think Simon, Sr. was mentioned in Rusher's book "Rise of the Right", though I could be wrong.
regardless, Simon, Sr. did great things for the conservative movement and the pro-life movement, and if this is the best attack Davis can come up with, bring it on, Joe!

Moderator: We agreed to no props
Gray Devious: "This a government report, not a prop."
Mod: "That's still a prop..."
Devious: "...Very proud of this."
(audience laughter)

Why are they debating now or is this prerecorded? It was Live.
Very odd time to debate and it would seem to minimize exposure.
Exactly. Gray Davis would not agree to any prime time debates, and set several other terms and conditions for this debate. There are other replies to the same question (#19) here

Who is "we" here, Riordan is a RINO who basically dissed the base by calling it a bunch of names. That would *not* help the party it would destroy it. Remember Riordan was a Clinton supporter and wrote checks to other Dem candidates. He'd be better than Davis but not by much.
The GOP selected the best candidate. Simon can win. Simon should win,k davis is a terrible Governor who has failed and mishandled many issues. And Simon WON that Debate! So lets go out and win this one, for the Gipper!

Camejo, the Green candidate, watched the debate on TV at The New Otani restaurant two blocks away, along with a bunch of FReepers.

"lose-lose" compared to what???
"Lose-lose" is running a Liberal Republican to defeat an incompetent liberal democrat.
Running the guy who *should* be Governor -- Bill Simon -- is the right answer.
He is a great candidate who attracts voters and doesnt repel them with negativity. Remember, the problems that Davi$ is creating will only get worse through his mismanagement ... sooner or later voters will come around. if Simon-style poactive and postive message campaigns are out there, they will win.
Just like Reagan did!

A man dressed as Superman showed up supporting Simon, as did a man dressed as a prostitute, wearing a Davis mask and carrying a sign, "Will work for bribes."
Intersting that a Beavis mask could easily be identified as a Gray Davis mask. ;-)

Superman (Outraged) made it on KCAL 9 in Los Angeles, but they missed the eGray Hooker, damn it.
