Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread
CNN, Fox, Local Radio and Television | October 8, 2002 | CNN, Fox, Breaking News

Posted on 10/08/2002 3:36:37 AM PDT by Peach

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

There are so many press conferences I thought we'd try to keep information coming in to one source. Police have said they are having so many press conferences because it's a way to keep the tips coming in to their tip line.

For what it's worth, I found the police chief in Prince Georges County who gave a press conference about 1/2 hour ago much less impressive than Chief Moose in Montgomery County.

good post, good idea ...

maybe this'll be the day that MD citizens spot the vermin,
drag them from their truck, van, whatever, beat them 98% to death,
then turn the bloody but still breathing lumps over to the cops/courts for a fair and speedy trial ...

Yikes! That's scary; Chief Moose certainly gave me no warm, fuzzy feelings that everthing was being handled with extreme competence.

Why aren't they using these press conferences as "America's Most Wanted" opportunities and reviewing what they know and want the public to look for? I know some of it they don't want the perps to know, but some of these press conferences have been "no new information, we'll take questions now" affairs. They're losing a great opportunity to train the public as to what to look for. For instance, if they think these guys are in a van, with a driver and shooter, watch out for drivers with earplugs or muffs.

I'm afraid so. By the way, I came about his press conference after it started, but he seemed to be saying that the Prince Georges county executive was not there with him because he was on a trip to South Africa!

Chief Moose is pretty frank about admitting the frustration he is experiencing. But even if he is not the world's greatest crime-stopper, he comes across as hard-working and sincere. His Prince Georges county counter-part seemed, in contrast, less authentic, more political, and clearly in over his head.

That is exactly what he said. I am dumbfounded that the Chief Executive doesn't come home! Also, has Governor Glendenning issued any sort of a statement yet?

[Chief Moose] . . . comes across as hard-working and sincere . . .

I agree, he does. I also sense, of course, he knows more than what he's telling.....besides the areas where he clearly states "he cannot provide that information" because of the ongoing investigation, etc. I am thinking, for example, of the question a reporter asked about "profiling." He, I am sure, knew the reporter was asking about the ethnicity, as well as psychological. But Moose was being PC . . . only mentioning the psychological and geographical profiling....never once addressing any OBVIOUS answer to "profiling." Side-stepping the question.

Since our local NBC affiliate, WRC-4, chose not to air the president last night, I ended up watching Fear Factor. During one commercial break, they had an 11:00 news tease promising the latest developments in the sniper case. They then followed this up with a commercial for "Just Shoot Me."
Brilliant!

Does anybody know the status of Maryland/Virginia's conceal carry laws? I can imagine many citizens packing a gun today...

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

Which means some neighbor turned in an innocent gun collector or hunter and now he has no more guns. You see, that's the way it works here in SRMD.

Maryland = no carry
Virginia = Shall Issue. By statute, local jurisdiction must act within 45 days granting permit unless disqualified, e.g., felon, outstanding warrants, etc.

beat them 98% to death,

you know...I think this would be one of those projects that I would actually FINISH...unlike the various painting, refinishing, etc., projects which make up the place I call 'home'.

I agree with the 98%....for a few hours.....then dump him in Silver Spring.

btw....any chance Vermin was 'laying low' over the weekend 'cuz he was painting his van?

I'm thinking they know the base area for the shooter(s) is Montgomery County . . . the shootings in Virginia and Prince Georges were because the shooter(s) is/are feeling so much heat they think they can direct attention away from themselves . . . if this holds true, any more incidents will be sporadic and away from Montgomery County . . .

Maryland's laws are quite restrictive.

Virginia's laws are "shall issue" (e.g., no criminal record, you get your permit).

I imagine the Virginia side of the river will be packing today.

You read my mind. That might be noted, however, a sign change of vehicle change might not. The first thing I thought of when they mentioned a mitsu van was taxi. The ethnics here in Atlanta love those vehicles for taxis due to the ability to cram lots of guys in to work. How suspicious is a driver and a passenger in the back of a taxi?

When fox first came on the air this morning, they broke to some female reporter near the last shooting. She said the cops got a little break yesterday, when they found a shell casing in a heavily wooded area near the school.A reporter must have brought this up today at the first briefing, because the cop said they couldn't go in to the evidence they got from yesterday.

I think all these shots are being taken on the ground, and this one was farther then the rest. That bullet that hit the kid had lost alot of energy,or it would have exited. The maximum effective range of the 223 on human targets is around 300 yards, thats what they told us in basic,so this shot was more than likely about that distance.

And this guy has a clear mind, and probably some formal training,he knows how to slip away.
