I have a different take on Sen. Byrd and what the Bush Administration should do about him: nothing!

I think that it was Napoleon that said, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." Byrd, in my opinion is making a huge mistake on behalf of the Democratic Party. Since military action will not occur until JAN-FEB '03, it isn't really important if the resolution is delayed by a couple of weeks. It won't affect war planning.

The election prospects for the Democrats are another matter. November is fast approaching.

I think Byrd has Earl Long potential -- a guy who descends into Alzheimer's rapidly, publicly and dramatically rather than privately and slowly.

In a few months he's gone from the pompous ass he's been for the past half-century to a guy who makes no sense on the podium, and who demands the podium more and more frequently for longer periods of time.

Depending on how you feel about Byrd, human dignity, and the stature of the Senate, the spectacle will be really depressing or really entertaining.

The psychotic break may occur in next week's filibuster, or not for a few weeks or months, but it's coming. If Daschle has any mercy, he'll find a way to limit Byrd's floor time.
The alternative is to have orderlies in white coats with butterfly nets at Byrd's side at all times.

Byrd is 3rd in line of succession to the Presidency. That's a comforting thought.

Actually, there's a genuine method to Cuckoo-Byrd's oratorical madness.

For a long time now, he's been the annointed Dem fillibusterer to camp out at the podium while back-room wheeling, dealing and trade-voting takes place elsewhere. Most viewers have no clue that he's always speaking to an almost empty floor.

Neither side wants a vacant screen appearing on C-Spam when they're conniving elsewhere, so they'll always send an accomplished yakker up to the mike to fill in the time, no matter what his IQ.

I enjoyed your post, but I grew up on Westerns. You had to check your gun before you had a drink with Miss Kitty. I try not to fly, but when I do I don't hanker being belted in when the Battle of Ia Drang Valley is being re-enacted at 35,000 feet. The crew should be armed. I'll take my chances that a 30-year Delta captain won't shoot me dead.

Regarding the war, whether Iraq is a threat tomorrow or 10 years from now, I'll breathe easier when Saddam is taken down. They are slow learners -- they're what National Geographic used to call a primitive society in the days before political correctness -- but after Iraq goes, I think Iran, then Syria, and finally Libya will begin to get the picture. If they're as dumb as they look, perhaps Iran will have to be taken down before Syria and the PLO get it.

There will be negative consequences from the war, but I don't think they're what people expect -- lots of dead Americans. It's possible the Chicoms will draw closer to the Russians to try to trump all-powerful America. And our so-called "allies" -- the French and Germans -- will give us more grief. But any country at risk to go under the crosshairs will move very circumspectly.

If nothing is done, the U.S. will be hit by at least one atomic bomb and/or smallpox pandemic in this decade. The war buys time to overcome the Islamist movement and for Russia and China to evolve into full democracies. Mid-century, perhaps China will have a bigger economy than America, and they can assume the role of global cop and we can gripe like the Swedes, and the Canadians, and the French. Meanwhile, we're it.

Some conflicts can't be won with a few guys with deer rifles. This is one of them. It takes the global military power of the big, bad U.S.A. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and Wolfowitz included.
