A stroke victim's granddaughter and his three young grandsons have been accused of beating him after he refused to divulge his bank card PIN, and then trying to bury him alive in a South Jersey woods, the authorities said yesterday.
A fisherman who heard moaning rescued the man, James Buckner, 58, of Paulsboro on Saturday morning, several hours after his grandchildren had left him for dead, half-naked, the police said. Paulsboro is in Gloucester County, about 10 miles southwest of Camden.
Mr. Buckner's granddaughter, Robin Fletcher, 24, and his grandsons, 16, 13 and 10, were arrested, the police said. Ms. Fletcher and the two teenagers were charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, robbery, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, the police said. The 10-year-old was charged with kidnapping and conspiracy.
The three boys' names were not released by the police. The oldest is Ms. Fletcher's brother, and the other two boys are their cousins.
The police said the four had spent months plotting their grandfather's death before trying to suffocate him and bury him alive. Mr. Buckner suffered numerous cuts and bruises in the attack, which began at his granddaughter's home in a rundown neighborhood in Paulsboro. He was treated at a hospital.
Mr. Buckner's wife, Roberta, said in a telephone interview that the grandchildren were trying to take his money, but she did not know why they would try to hurt a man who she said had helped raise them.
"They were trying to get his PIN number, trying to kill him," she said. "They wanted to get into his bank account. I don't know why. You know kids nowadays."
Neighbors of Ms. Fletcher said that several relatives lived together in the worn yellow house, and that the police had been called several times because of fights with the neighbors.
One neighbor, Cindy Archut, 30, said she often heard yelling from the Fletchers' house next door, but not from the grandfather, who had been left with a speech problem after a recent stroke.
According to the authorities, Ms. Fletcher and the boys were arguing with Mr. Buckner at her home around 2 p.m. Friday when she wrapped a plastic bag over his head and tried to suffocate him. When the bag broke, she covered his mouth and nose with her hand until he lost consciousness.
Ms. Fletcher then beat Mr. Buckner with a hammer, and she and the boys dragged him to his car and put him in the back seat, the police said. Ms. Fletcher and the 13-year-old boy drove him to a local apartment complex, where she hit him with the hammer every time he began to regain consciousness, the police said.
When the other youths joined them, they tried to get his bank card number, but Mr. Buckner gave them incorrect information, the police said. Then, the police said, the four drove around and eventually took Mr. Buckner to a cemetery in nearby Deptford, where they continued to try to beat the information out of him. They tried to bury him in the cemetery, but when they found that the ground was too hard, they took him to a nearby retention pond, where they left him, beaten and stripped to his underwear, the police said.
Ms. Fletcher was being held yesterday in the Gloucester County Jail in $150,000 bail, and the two older boys were held at a juvenile detention center. The 10-year-old was released to the custody of his parents.

This "self-esteem" stuff is what those kids have been taught. What YOU decide is moral is moral. YOU make your own decisions. YOU can decide to do whatever YOU what to do whenever YOU want to do it. If YOU want to plot to kill your grandfather and bury him half naked, what's it to anyone else?
Umm, right. Interesting rationalization from the wife of the kids' grandfather. The article's wording seems to carefully avoid calling her the kids' grandmother.
Still ---what happened in these kids' lives to make them so full of hate? Maybe the grandfather was cruel, maybe there was never any love in that family. Kids raised with love wouldn't all turn out bad.
Well, I don't know, but it's idiotic to blurt out with "they're just kids." Just kids don't beat family members to death, and even their upbringing doen't excuse their actions in my eyes.
Yeah, just another episode of Little Rascals.
