CORRALITOS, Calif.(AP) - A man with the environmental activist group Earth First! has died after a 50-foot fall from a redwood tree in which he'd lived for several weeks.

Rescue personnel were called to the scene of a logging operation in the Ramsey Gulch area about 20-miles south of San Jose on Tuesday night after loggers heard moans coming from the area where a group of tree-sitters has been camped since August, the group said. It was unclear how long the injured man had been on the ground.

The owners and/or rights holders of the land should simply prevent trespassing.

I wonder if loggers could somehow transplant a few hornets nests to the trees around them, then just sit on the ground and shoot BB guns? Wouldn't that be great?

I think the technical term is sudden deacceleration.

The technical term for the rate of change of acceleration is... jerk! ;)

As in the jerk died from too much jerk.

Excellent. I'd been thinking of those anthropomorphic apple trees from The Wizard of Oz who took exception to Dorothy picking their apples, and was wondering if the redwood regarded its visitor as a parasite and simply kicked him out.

...he'd make good manure?

Vaguely recall a Reuters piece on Swedish scientists that figured out a fast way to compost human remains.

Possibly. But I'd be concerned with infected precious bodily fluids. Doesn't it take something like 2000 degrees to destroy preons (prions?)? (of Mad Cow and CJD fame)

I wonder if his family feels he died for a worthy cause. I'm sure the TREE appreciates his sacrifice.

Darwin award contender.

It was unclear how long the injured man had been on the ground.... The man, who was believed to have a broken arm and leg..."

I'd give him a score of 7.5. To achieve a high score one should have a clean neck snap. But he did die, so ultimate effectiveness should be worth something.

So many trees. So few tree sitters. Even fewer now.

Anybody else find the following statement from the AP report a little baffling:
"... Julia "Butterfly" Hill spent two years 180 feet up a 1,000-foot redwood.."

From the Guiness Book of World Records:
"The tallest living tree today is the Mendocino Tree, a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) found at Montgomery State Reserve near Ukiah, California, USA. In September 1998, it was 172 m (367.5 ft) tall, with a diameter of 3.14 m (10 ft)."

Another example of some eco-idiot not knowing what the hell their talking about.

Like wow dude, where have you been ? These people are kind, and free, and loving, and pure, and, and, something. Surely they have nothing in them that would harm the Great Trees.

Now you run along and run around the biggest tree you can find 100 times, chanting " I Love You, Great Tree"....

So if a tree-sitter falls in the forest you do hear him. Otherwise he wouldn't have been rescued. I'm sorry he died but Darwin was right.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks!

This tree clearly does not meet the California ADA requirements. It must be cut down, or brought into compliance. But the tree was inhabited by the mentally disabled.

How do these people make a living? Who pays their way through life?

The US taxpayers do. That's why Reagan kept making calls to "defund the left".

I feel fiendish laughing at this thread, but I can't help it!!! Seriously though take a moment and remember all those loggers who have been senselessly killed because of some of the stunts tree activists have pulled and you really won't feel bad about laughing. These people aren't just freaks, in many cases they're murderers.

No word on that, but the market thinks he did (DJIA back above 7500).
