How many of the 12,000 matches were correct. The FBI is known to have recovered a bullet from a murder victim, and a gun from a suspect, and then tried hard to get a "match". Usually, they are successful - the FBI always gets their man. (Just ask Richard Jewell, or possibly Steven Hatfill.)

What a crock. They call it "ballistic fingerprinting" and such to gull the naive, when it is nothing of the sort. All the so-called "matches" can do is provide a list of tens of thousands of "likely" guns.
This is national gun registration, pure and simple.
We need to attack it as such by clearly and loudly proving that these are in no way the same as "fingerprints", and worse for LEAs, they can be changed by a crook at any time.
the ONLY utility from this system will be to provide FLEAs with a national registry of ALL firearms.

I heard Gov. Glenspending on the TV yesterday. He still won't say that MD's database for handguns has even been checked. He just complains that the program doesn't apply to long-barreled weapons. Well, we still don't know for sure that this isn't being done with a handgun. What harm would it do to check the database?
To: sharktrager
Article doesn't mention how easy it is to change the signature. I guess the news department at the WSJ is showing us what its agenda is.

Why does 1.58 (rifle) get a longer bar than 1.96(pistol)?

And if this legislation passes, before the ink is even dry, some feel good liberal will stand up in congress and say "As good as this bill is it will not solve the problem of gun crimes in the United States." Thereby leaving the door wide open for yet another step toward total firearm confiscation.
Why is it so important for these liberal socialists to travel the same failed path of the Europeans? If they like Europe so much, why don't they just move there and leave us alone?
I'm certain that were my firearms to be confiscated, I would be hard pressed to get any wildlife officer to come out to my home at 2am to get the brown bear out of my chicken coop.

Ballistic fingerprinting ONLY records "Point of Sale"...doesn't do squat for underground sale of stolen guns - stolen guns - guns received as gifts - guns purchased in one state and re-sold in another...guns purchased eons ago...
To: from occupied ga
This is just another ploy by the anti-gunners to register firearms so that they can confiscate them later. I'm confused about something. If I have a handgun and it's registered, doesn't the gubermint already have the info they need to confiscate it if they want to?

Well exactly.
To: Travis McGee
It is a total fraud and will of course be espoused by all the usual idiots when the facts show that distinctive markings on bullet or casing are changed by such factors as wear, cleaning, maintaining the firearm and intentional changes.
In an earlier reply on this same thread I also mentioned that the supposed agreement never to use this registry as a registry may be totally discounted when one merely looks at the history of the Brady Instant records check data that Kennedy, Schummer Scummer, Fineswine, Boxer and others objected to be destroyed when the law specifically called for that.
This proposal is absolute carbage and should be treated as such.

"Why does 1.58 (rifle) get a longer bar than 1.96(pistol)?" Because the people writing the articles and making the graphics are innumerate jerks, who will never let a fact stand in the way of a good propaganda hit.

You're both right. Now gets see how long before we see the following statement from the anti-gun crowd - "According to the ultra-conservative Wall Street Journal the number of pistols manufactured each year has increased to 1.96 million, more than double what has been previously reported"

This has been on the anti-American agenda for years, and this indicent may actually give it to them. Of course, the anti-Americans will claim that this doesn't ban guns, only identifies them.
In other words, they are more interested in identifying us as gun owners than identifying illegal aliens who commit serious crimes.
To: sharktrager
Stupid plan. Not if the real goal is universal registration. Then it's a brilliant plan. Never underestimate the deviousness of the anti-rights fascists.
