I heard Hackworth saying the same sort of thing about 3 weeks and I didn't think he sounded very convincing. He seems to operate on the assumption that because he is the military expert - and he personally knows a lot of military experts - he knows more than anyone else about this. No matter what argument you give him for going to war, he's disdainful because you're not a military expert like he is. I personally think he may have a screw loose. Pride tends to do that to people.

My next door neighbor is a company commander in the National Guard. They're a chemical weapons unit consisting of 172 troops and will likely ship out to Iraq when things start rolling because of the danger of chemical weapons. I guaranty Bush & Co. are well aware of the threats facing our military and that the last thing they want is to send large numbers of ill-equiped troops into that sort of environment.

Whatever defects existed in the equipment previously, they'll be well resolved before we move on Iraq.

It's not "about" oil, but oil is a consequence. And the Saudis are very worried...

Hackworth is a man of the Left, dependably liberal to radical in his foreign policy. Has been ever since he was drummed out of the Army 30+ years ago.

Col. David Hackworth is someone I highly respect as a voice of the soldier.

He left the Army and moved to Australia because of his views on nuclear weapons.

Supporting our soldiers is what he does better than almost anyone else I know.

When it comes to American military stratigic tactics, he is over his pay grade.

There's a lot going on with Iraq. It has "oil" as a component, and it's silly to ignore that. With the second largest reserves of any OPEC country, Iraq can't be thought of without this petroleum compenent. Either this oil will push prices down, or lack of it could cause prices to skyrocket. I've been worried how this balancing act could be carried out by George W. and the U.S. after Saddam is out.

For instance, Pakistan is probably as great a terrorist threat as Iraq is. Could we possibly imagine invading Pakistan and trying to occupy and pacify that population. We somehow think that the Iraqis will appreciate us and that this nation-building exercise will be a cakewalk.

I think that the oil-equation makes our power-elite think that this war is worth the risk. The law of unintended consequences predicts that this will be, if not Vietnam, at least 5x Bosnias or 10x Afghanistans--neither of which has an exit strategy yet either.

I admire George W. for being willing to enter this nest of vipers, known as the Islamic Middle East. To plant ourselves squarely among the "vipers" and to forcefully stabilize this region will dramatically change our history, the political future of Islam, and the world.

Hackworth also stated that Saddam couldn't have a nuclear weapon for another five years. That statement is clearly over the top. He has nothing to base that on. Again, he is out of his area of expertise and perhaps over the hill.

As much as I respect his past service and heroism... he and his whinny complaining voice and his cute little black turtleneck dicky is getting more than a little tiresome...

Most guys will block out or attempt to forget the painful years of their lives....This guy thrives and supports himself discussing in on TV or in books.

Over and Over and Over

When he talks on what he knows, military training and tactics, he is very good. If Saddam uses chemical weapons, there could be a problem moving ground forces forward. It means the air campaign will be more intensive for a while.

Well, if I could choose who to provide me with military advice, I would certainly pick Hackworth over 99.9% of anyone that posts in this thread.

Hackworth thinks that the armed forces are an encounter group for macho posturing and masculine self-esteem reinforcement therapy. It doesn't occur to him that soldiers are supposed to defend the country, which might actually involve getting killed.

Remember what Bush said, were going to 'Smoke' them out. I don't think an American is going in until most of Iraqs military infrastucture is destroyed. We could starve them out in 3 months with a good blockade.

I've heard Hackworth a couple of times on the Hannity radio show and this is what he thinks we should do: send in inspectors and, at the first location where the Iraqis refuse to let them have unrestricted access, we should drop a deep-penetrating nuclear weapon. His theory is that conventional weapons would spread Saddam's chemical/biological agents stored there, while a nuclear weapon would burn them up. He seems to be serious about this.

Anyone with any brains knows that dropping a nuclear weapon simply because inspectors aren't allowed into some location would turn the entire world against us in a second. The fact that he's suggesting this means that either A) he's nuts, B) he's an idiot or C) he's spreading disinformation. Take your pick, but, whichever it is, it means you can't take anything he's saying very seriously.

Why don't you ask him. Unlike every other bozo on tv and radio that gives out their email addresses, Col. Hack actually replies (tries to )to every email he gets. He did so twice to me.
Email him a question............teagles@hackworth.com

He could be a bit shy of war due to first hand experience.
Leaders who cared more for advancement up the ranks than for the lives of their troops.
Equipment known to be near useless but touted as excellent.
Politicians who use the military for their own personal ends.
