Fox has just confirmed North Korea has admitted to the United States that they have a secret nuclear weapons program. This breaks a treaty signed with the Clinton Administration, in exchange for N. Korea not having nuclear weapons, the US agreed to build non-lethal nuclear plants for them.
Once again, Clinton's treaties turn out to be worth as much as his word.
If their is any lesson this nation should have learned after WWII! It's that we can never ignore gathering dangers ever again, Unfortunately, many of our teachers and professors during the late fifties and sixties fell for the "Utopian Hogwash" that the Communist and Socialist propaganda machine was feeding them at the time. Unfortunately these leftist managed to infiltrate our Media, Schools, and Government to the point that we have been subjected to that we are the bad guys and we should blame ourselves for the worlds problems.
Every single democrat that has been president (except Harry S. Truman) has ignored or appeased the evil that threatens the world and by no streatch of the imagination, Bill Clinton not only ignored and appeased the evils of the world, he promised to ignore the gathering dangers as long as he and his party could remain in power. I believe that if anything can destroyu this nation, IT WILL BE LIBERALS
I agree. I'm only guessing at this, but I suspect that a lot of people in many parts of the world expected the old anti-Vietnam-war coalition to shout Bush down. Certainly it's been trying. It may be that there are some cold calculators in Pyongyang who are now convinced that he really is going to bounce Iraq, in which case the customary protestations of peace-loving innocence won't cut much ice. They are further convinced that the "Axis of Evil" speech was more than hot air.
This really overturns the kettle, and will have a number of interesting effects. For one, the "Cowboy Out Of Control" crowd in Europe is going to look a bit silly and Bush considerably vindicated. This on top of Bali and all of a sudden the idea that he's striking out blindly or after some ulterior oil motive sounds as silly and irrelevant as it always was. For another, the emphasis in the UN now shifts from isolating the issue to Iraq to a much riskier and more demanding policy decision regarding what to do about countries who are obdurate about pursuing forbidden weaponry. My guess is that there will be some serious midnight oil burning at UN headquarters tonight.
On the one hand, Saddam is probably not too happy because this makes the intervention in Iraq more likely. On the other hand, he may feel it's bought him some time by distraction. I don't think anyone in Japan or South Korea is actually surprised - their intel is pretty good too - but now they're going to have to make some heavy policy decisions of their own. Does Japan rearm? Does it activate its own nascent nuclear program? Can we now contemplate withdrawing troops from South Korea? How does China react?
This is very, very interesting, and I guess that I understand better why "may you live in interesting times" was a Chinese curse.
ADDITIONAL FLASH INFORMATION FROM MAINICH NEWS IN JAPANESE TODAY: It has been revealed today the possibility (rumored reports) that there are 10! TEN such North Korean processing facilities, modeled upon the Kumchangri reactor that we demanded be shut down in favor of light water reactor (under the NPT). It is rumored they have built TEN of these, primarily underground.
Further, State Dept Official Kelly on 4 October in Pyongyang produced high quality US intelligence satellite photos of one of these facilities. He showed them directly to Kan Sok Chu, the First Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Government of North Korea. The stunning reply from Kan, essentially 'yes, this is correct. We have been developing these'. Big news freepers.

Despite comments here, I think China and Russia are putting some pressure on NK.
The American military strategy since at least the Gulf War, if not longer, was to fight single, isolated engagements while keeping all other "issues" (flash point areas) calm. One battle at a time, with complete control maintained.
We have spent quite a bit of energy trying to make sure that the Israel/Palestinian situation didn't boil over, for just this strategy. Perhaps our enemies are engaging in a counter-strategy.
If they can overload us, get us fighting many battles (including the sniper cell at home?) at once, hoping to spin certain areas out of our control they will at least upset our strategy and force us to form a different strategy -- one which we seem to be uncomfortable with.
Perhaps that is the role of the dice that NK is taking with its "admission" and subsequent belligerent attitude. Maybe they're trying to get a few pots boiling at once, thinking that this will upset America's long-held strategy of "one at a time".
Additional reports. My, former Prime Minister Hashimoto in D.C. at this moment is sure talking with the Japanese press. He says the White House has entered into immediate discussions on this problem with the Congress. I am sure the Bush admin. has summoned the major leaders there, or they had a second meeting today after the signing for a major briefing on the findings of Kelly's trip to Pyongyang. Serious. Red Hot news.

The concrete was poured a couple weeks ago. American and South Korean companies are putting the hardware together as we speak.....but this is a pressurized light water reactor. It has no usefulness to a weapons program, other than the electricity it can produce, which can be used for other ahem..things.
Those crazy North Koreans will not be even able to run or maintain the plant without continued foreign help. It would be easy to pull the plug on the project even if the plant is built to completion and comissioned. Start up is scheduled for around 2006.
