“This story happened more than ten years ago. I have probably forgotten some details of it, but I still remember the point of what happened back in those days. It is time to unravel military secrets. It happened in the summer of 1990. It was the era of perestroika, Boris Yeltsin, and the last days of the USSR. A Greenpeace ship traveled to the island of Novaya Zemlya, to our nuclear testing ground. The Soviet television broadcast a lot of reports about the CIA’s provocative activities. The Andromeda submarine was watching the Greenpeace ship in the Barents Sea, under a depth of 150 meters. Submariners were sick and tired of that convoy: ecologists would either make sudden stops, or change their course. They were definitely having fun with the Soviet sub. A submarine is not a bike, and it is not easy for a sub to follow a small vessel. The captain of the Andromeda sub was dog tired of reporting about the Greenpeace navigation. There were other ships to watch the ecological vessels, so submariners were getting more and more furious. They even called Greenpeace 'Green Piss,' made bad jokes about it, tried to cheer themselves up."

A decade ago greenpeace was disrupting US Navy submarine missile tests off of FL. They would get in the way in zodiacs and cause a dozen ships and support craft to abort. This went on for a few days. SEALs were called in: "do something".

They taped sharp knives to boathooks, went out to play with the greenies in their own zodiacs, came alongside to say hi and popped one each of their tubes, causing the greenies to limp home, not to reappear.

Funny, the US press never talks about Novaya Zemlya.
Not only is it Russia's main test site, it is also their nuclear dump. A total of 6 reactors have been dumped in the ocean off of Novaya Zemlya from vessels who's reactors melted down. The subs were filled with concrete and then sunk while the reactors from the ice breaker, "Lenin" were simply dumped.

I wonder who the Navy thought Maica was representing when she sailed through exercises off the coast of Puerto Rico in 1976?

Just herself. Navy sailors love to see little sailboats offshore, they consider them the purest and noblest of all seamen.

Especially pre GPS.

I bet it was a beautiful sight from the viewpoint of the bridge. A racing boal as hard on the wind as we could sail was not as enjoyable in the cockpit. Especially when the helicopter hovered overhead!

The sailors lounging on patiochairs on the barge downrange of the ships didn't seem to mind the intrusion, however. Those days were also before sunscreen, when getting a tan was a good thing!

Those were also days before women on Navy ships, and men at sea were like ravenous wolves for just a sight of a female under 50. All a bygone era. Now they can just bat eyes at Seaman Cindy.
