US federal officers in New York have met a flight arriving from Moscow after a warning about one of its passengers and reports that some radioactive material was on board.
One man has been detained for questioning but correspondents say the inquiry appears to be about smuggling and is not related to terrorism.
The Aeroflot plane was sent to an empty area of John F Kennedy Airport after it landed at around 1400 local time (1800 GMT), having been told to steer clear of the passenger terminals, reports said.
Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), customs officials and Port Authority police met the scheduled flight and the 176 passengers were taken off the plane in small groups.
An unnamed law enforcement official told the Associated Press news agency: "They had advance information of possible radioactive materials for us to be looking at this flight."
An FBI spokesman said: "Based on information provided to us, we and the customs service and the Port Authority have an interest in interviewing one of the passengers."
There were no reports of injuries among the passengers and crew on the plane.

We live in interesting times. Today appears to be Russia's bad day.

Maybe Putin will be a little more friendly to our effort to replace the estimable Mr. Hussein.

Give'em a while. No doubt we will soon hear that the problem was a suitcase full of hot Italian tiles. Happens all the time.

What? Atoms on board the plane? What kind, hydrogen atoms? Very dangerous.

Well, if we'd been more favorable to his efforts against the jihadis he'd be a little more inclined to play ball with us.
As it is, i think it's not Saddam as much as billions of dollars they want payment on.

Smuggling radioactive materials is NOT related to terrorism?

Ditto
radioactive material + smuggling = terrorism
At least to my way of thinking. Why else would you be smuggling radioactive material????

"Possibly hydrogen atoms each attached to two oxygen atoms?"
Other way around, two hydrogen atoms attached to each oxygen atom.

A "hold muh isotopes" alert!
As much as I deplore the violence, Russia should be on our side. A few more incidents like the one today, and they will be.

As Homer Simpson would say: "Doh!"
