FWIW, all these articles preceded the publication of Falwells (National Liberty Journal) TT critiques:

On the 24th of December, 1997 CNN reported that Tinky Winky was gay.

"The Teletubbies also have a following among the gay community. Tinky Winky, who carts around a red handbag but speaks with a male voice, has become something of a gay icon." CNN, 12/24/97

On April 17, 1998, the Village Voice praised the Teletubbies series for their gay Tinky Winky character.

On January 1, 1999, in its New Year's IN/OUT list, The Washington Post anointed "Tinky Winky, the gay Teletubby," as next year's Ellen DeGeneres.

In 1997, when the BBC, which produces the show, wanted to fire the human who plays Tinky for dancing in the streets wearing only a balloon, gay groups protested. It has also been reported that some gay groups have "claimed Tinky Winky as their own". (Washington Post, February 11, 1999, Page C01)

Falwell was, in fact, responding to these media pronouncements. I think he thought it was "on purpose" - and possibly that's not completely false. The gay guy *was* fired for putting a littel too much swish into the role.

But Falwells pronouncements , though absurd on first impression, aren't THAT outlandish.

If the purple teletubby is delaimed to be gay by folks who ought to know, and one accepts that TV images make an impression on children, and that homosexuality is immoral and sinful, perhaps parents should be aware that the teletubby is percieved as "gay" in certain circles.

Amazing how many people concern themselves with the imaginary sexual orientation of a stuffed animal.

These reports are apparently all about claims made by a certain noisy subset of the gay community -- claims which are ignored by thinking people. And cheers to BBC for canning the actor for making a public appearance "wearing only a balloon" -- though I wonder if the police didn't get to him first.

I think he got a bum rap is all...its his job to pronounce gay things bad, I think.

The main reason I resented the "gay" teletubby was I had to fight club kids to get my tot niece the "purple boy" for her collection.

The first thing I said to my husband when I found out the main perp was almost 30 years older than the younger perp was....I bet they're gay....

why??? ....because I do think males who have homosexual leanings learn to hang with their own kind, bonding along the way, and the fact that a serial killer has a partner is so unusual...that the relationship probably was abnormal to begin with..

Main reason I would suspect homosexuality here is .....there apparently was so much rage in MOhammed....so much anger....I think his rage had mostly to do with his sexuality issues....it wasn't religious, because he could have just shot white people coming out of church....

Phobia is an irrational fear. So the answer would be, only if they were driven to kill by irrational fears. It is not irrational to fear a known terrorist, nor a known child rapist if it approaching your child. And I've never heard of fear -- irrational or otherwise -- being the motivating factor behind the killings of drug dealers or Presidents. It seems you are having trouble following the argument.

The Washington Post is the enemy of FR; 'nuff said about them. CNN is just totally off the wall -- are they still on their gotta call 'em "alleged hijackers" 'cause we can't call them "hijackers" 'cause they haven't been convicted in court kick? Jerry Falwell is a sucker -- radical gays can make him see homosexuality anywhere they want him to see it, just by saying that THEY see it -- but he's not homophobic, just a sucker. Fred Phelps is homophobic (along with several other serious mental disorders, but that seems to be the chief one).
