WASHINGTON -- Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, one of the last unapologetic liberals left in Congress and known among his friends as a ``pied piper of modern politics,'' died Friday in a Minnesota plane crash. He was 58.

Wellstone's wife, Sheila Ison Wellstone, and daughter Marcia also died in the crash. Three campaign staff members and two pilots also perished.

"I disagreed with Senator Wellstone on just about every issue, but he was a liberal who really believed in what he was doing and stood for his principles and fought for them. I'd like to see more people like this on both sides."

I'd be happy to see even a FEW on our side. Seems like all of ours are gutless wonders.

I'm having a "to-do" with my wife over this. She says, 'It's terrible'. I shrug my shoulders. She gets mad at me for my reaction. She says, 'A human being died today'. I tell her 'humans die every day and if I thought abouth that, I'd never get out of bed. Besides, liberals are hardly human.'

Looks like it's the couch tonight. ;-)

At least he never hid that he was a socialist liberal like most all the RATS do but his death is leaving me with a degree of suspicion. Ron Brown, John jr, Carnahan, a coincidence ?

My comment on Paul Wellstoned on another thread has already been pulled. But this article tells you all you need to know about how great a "tragedy" his untimely death was. He was a socialist, a liar, and an enemy of freedom.

No, they already announced soon after his death that his name would be removed from the ballot. Jessie Ventura can appoint a replacement.

The comment about his opponent conceding was not so far out of line. The sympathy vote for whoever ends up on the ballot could elect a democrat.

fox said it was a courageous vote also. I am just wondering what kind of far lefty they plan to put in his place. I this the only way they could win the race. Maybe Welstones polls didn't show him with a winning hand.

In 1996, he [Wellstone] angered gay rights supporters by voting for the "Defense of Marriage" bill, which allowed states to withhold legal recognition of same-sex unions from other states.

On this sad day, I choose to point out the [political] good in Senator Wellstone. He evidently did vote his conscience, and didn't always follow the DNC party line.

But next week, watch out ;)
