October 28, 2002 -- Two days after a daring rescue at a Moscow theater turned into a massacre, Russia is coming under fire for apparently using a secret - and deadly - nerve gas to thwart the terrorists.

Yevgeny Yevdokimov, Moscow's chief anesthesiologist, described the gas as an incapacitating agent used as an anesthetic.

I didn't have the opportunity to keep up with as I would have liked to. Brief reports I did hear claimed that all but one of the terrorists were killed by Russian forces that stormed the theatre. If they used a gas powerful enough to knock out and kill some of the hostages, why didn't the gas have the same effect, proportionately, on the terrorists? Were they wearing gas masks anticipating this type of retaliation?

I am leaning toward an unknown nerve agent in this operation. The Russians are still leagues ahead of us in chemical weapons’ development. (Of course, we do not do any chemical weapons development; only research antidotes. LOL) From the reports and pictures I saw, the terrorists were all shot while they were incapacitated. The Russians had to maximize the exposure levels to ensure the terrorists didn't detonate te explosives. I don't think it would be possible to determine the number of terrorists who were actually killed/incapacitated by the gas. I haven't seen any indication of gas masks.

The efficacy of gaseous agents varies greatly, as do the variables inherent in any real-world deployment. This can be construed as a positive in a military launch because decon/triage procedures require three times as many people as the actual number of casualties. In this particular instance, this ratio worked against the rescuers: they would have had to deploy 1500-2000 people instantaneously to ensure the best outcome for the hostages. Overall, it was a horrible situation with no good way out.

LOL!

Can you imagine if Carter had humbly swaggered into the theater to "mediate" the dispute?

"I met Mr. Baryev. He was a gracious and friendly host. He is remarkably fit for a man who hasn't slept in 48 hours and his followers obviously adore him. He explained his grievances to me and I must say, they moved me emotionally. I call upon Mr. Putin and especially Mr. Bush to put down their weapons and listen this eloquent and decent man of the people. Enough war-mongering. I am serious about this. I want a group hug. So does Mr. Baryev. That is why he sent one of his chief lieutenants, this lovely sister of Islam, out with me. She and Mr. Baryev have given me their word that during this hug for peace she will not detonate her explosive belt."

...the terrorists were all shot while they were incapacitated.

Could you imagine the outrage of some of the nuts in this country (Sarandon, Barbra, et al) if we ever did anything like that? Thanks for the update!

"I am leaning toward an unknown nerve agent in this operation."

Me, too. As I commented in another thread, I have a friend who was in the OSS during WWII. He remained in touch with intelligence people well into the 1980s. He told me the Russians actually had developed an agent--he called it "Silver Dust"--which was designed to be distributed in a room (using a grenade-type dispenser?). Everyone who inhaled it would "go down like a stone" and "most of them would wake up again".

I asked him if the U.S. had anything similar and he clammed up.

Yep, I have heard rumors of such agents for years. If one could be developed so that "everyone" could get up afterward, it would be a miracle.

I asked him if the U.S. had anything similar and he clammed up.

Seems to be the standard response. LOL

I am disgusted at the Monday morning quarterbacks who refuse to understand the gravity of the situation.

Right on. The people complaining here are the same folks who would have whined had Bush been able to shoot down the two jetliners before they crashed into the WTC towers.

I'm sure the Russians didn't intentionally kill their own people. But surely drastic measures were called for. The alternative would have been 800+ dead bodies almost for sure. It takes guts to make the decision that Putin did just as it would have taken guts to shoot down those two airliners in NYC. Had the two airliners been shot down, the terrorist operation would have been a total failure from the point of view of the terrorists. I'm sure that the terrorists are going to think twice before storming a Russian theater again.

Has anyone else seen the highlighted footage where you can see either a soldier or a medic administering what looks like a an atropine style antidote injector?

Russian Special Forces: 116 Civilians (and counting)
Chechan Rebels: 2 Civilians

Russian Special Forces win.

I'm sure they did. Just as they did when they blew up their own apartment buildings in Moscow and blamed it on Chechen rebels.

The attack was started with what the media described as "Flash Bang" grenades...

Clear. You can see for miles. However, there's a report of an ignorance front coming in from afar.

Russia staged its own '9/11'.

An apartment manager saw a truck unloading bags into the basement parking area of his apartment complex. He called the local police and they showed up. The bags were filled with yellowish granular material and the ones unloading it were identified as members of the Russian Interior Department (or whatever it is the KGB are called these days).

Shortly thereafter, the evidence aquired by the local police was confiscated by the Feds and the apartment manager and local police were told that it was a *drill*, and that the bags were really full of sugar, not explosives, and that they had done very well in noticing and reporting what was happening.

The above was reported in some major Russian papers.

The Russians staged their own 9/11 to gain support for an invasion of oil-rich Chechnya, which had claimed and maintained its independance. There has never been any evidence provided to support the claim that Chechen rebels staged the bombings.

If most of the people in the audience had been packing, the initial takeover would not have succeeded.

Bombings? I assume you mean the hostage taking episode, but I wonder if it all went down differently on your planet. On our planet, the Chechens made themselves readily available to the televised media. Or was that all faked as well?

Man, Reynolds stock must be holding Wall street together right now....

I'm talking about the apartment bombings in the Moscow area in 1999, not the latest hostage-taking event, which obviously was indeed done by Chechens.

You know, I sometimes wonder what we would do if some powerful force -- say aliens with advanced tech, for example -- landed and took over our country, eliminated our form of government, and proceded to do whatever they wanted. Let us say this force was so powerful that our every attempt at military action was simply obliterated to the point that we no longer had an effective military.

Hmm, what would we do? Would we just give up? Throw in the towel? I doubt it, but it is easy to condemn when we're fat, happy, and the most powerful nation on Earth.
