Give Bush Another Term

October 27, 2002

Voters should return Gov. Jeb Bush to Tallahassee for a second term.

While not the ideal governor, he has provided solid leadership during trying economic times and has the experience and pragmatism to lead the state in the difficult years ahead. Bush has a detailed grasp of the issues and isn't afraid to take tough stands that offend powerful special interests.

The Republican governor's Democratic opponent, Bill McBride, on the other hand, appears to have no concept of the economic realities facing Florida. It's truly frightening that a major candidate for governor would support constitutional Amendment 9 limiting school class sizes, and other spending initiatives, without any understanding of the financial chaos they would bring to the state. It's absurd to think the chaos would be mitigated by his proposed additional 50-cent tax on a pack of cigarettes.

McBride, 57, campaigns with the down-home, good ol' boy style popularized by the late Gov. Lawton Chiles, but Chiles he's not. In fact, McBride is the Democratic standard-bearer only because Democrats with substantially greater qualifications dropped out of the race. They did so when former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno entered it and appeared to be a shoo-in for her party's nomination.

There needs to be a compelling reason to remove a competent incumbent from office, and the lackluster McBride candidacy clearly does not provide it. Doing good works in the Tampa Bay area and heading a law firm hardly qualifies him for election to the highest office in state government.

Hmmmm-- ordinarily, I'd laugh at what I'm getting ready to say: Does anyone smell conspiracy here? I mean, Jeb is getting a lot of surprising/unexpected endorsements from the liberal side of the political spectrum. (P. S.: where does the Sun-Sentinel gt off saying that he's not the ideal governor? Who would they deign to say is ideal?)

I hope and pray he wins, wish I could vote in Fla, NJ, Mo, and MN. We really need to get more people in office who have the interest of the country in mind.

Although it's great that even a leftist rag like that is supporting Jeb it's still wrong to do so. Newspapers are supposed to be neutral.

Will someone please explain to the writer of this piece that you can not return someone for a "second time" unless he has been some place twice already . You can return Jeb or you can elect him for a second time but;you can't return him for a "second time" Isn't it nice to be able to sweat such small stuff while we wait to celebrate next week?

"What's up with these people??"

What's up?? SUBSTANCE, ACCOUNTABILITY, REALITY is up, in fashion!!

IMAGE is OUT: of syle, of fashion, of vogue, THAT'S what. They want to SURVIVE, financially, and they can no longer afford to pick the losers with the best vote fraud tallies! ACCOUNTABILITY if the new keyword if you want your publication to survive, lol!!

Gotta love the irony of it...Hillary is gonna have a hard time, even in NY...IF the old adage about Jews holding a grudge holds true.
