~~~Yeah, but you have the Oregon Remote Umpquah Valley Gopher speed system that works at about 2k per minute. How would you know if the system slowed down? :) ~~~
ROFL!
I'll have you know that out here in B.F.E. I am zipping along at a connection speed of 24,000 bps today. WooHoo!
And I will only explain B.F.E. via frmail....lol. I would make myself blush and most assuredly have the explanatory post nuked.
Some poor freeper posted yester that his connection moves along at about 1200 12000 bps during normal times, so Free Republic hadn't slowed down for him at all.
I have high speed inter-net access and new, very fast computer and I still had trouble with Free Republic the last few days. I couldn't even get on at times. I was having no trouble with any other site.
LOL.
I love you when you're mad Gramps. Right or wrong you're most effective, not to mention my adopted online Grampa.
Have you come down to earth yet after the Sawgrass Rebellion?
Great job!
We just have to keep working 24/7 to expose the Watermelon Jihadists and their goal to rurally cleanse all of us out of our homes.
Hey I got some answers, I think, to my questions about some of the stuff on Free Republic. Good to see that John and Jim Rob have things back to normal for we addicted ones.
Can you imagine not being able to use FR the week before an election and a week after the election. Most of us would be in AAA or some 13 step withdrawal program.
There has been some speculation that the slowness could be due to thousands of bogus requests made by hackers
I'm asking this in general - I tried to get my McAfee Firewall operative today. I'm still trying to get it working properly.
But twice when I managed to get to FreeRepublic, I received a total of 6 port scan alerts and 1 blocked TCP package alert over a short period of time.
Is this type of port scanning normal? I checked the IP's and found that the activity came from centralhost.com and verio.net.
Thanks to anyone who can provide an answer (or links).
By the time this election is over, they're going to have to put me in some AAA 13 step whatever, regardless of the status of FR.
Most around here become absolute freaks around this time of year, including the gentleman I co-pinged. Happens every time, every year. I've learned to expect it and deal with it.
Now excuse me, I have a Vodka-cranberry to attend to.
Your comment about a vodka cranberry reminded me that I'm out micro Beer. So I must log off and go get a good six pack.
As others have already said in slightly different words, If you're sitting there for several minutes while a Daily Dose (or other image heavy) page is loading, the FR server sees no load at all. The FR server has already sent out the plain text html for that page to you; now your computer is hung up waiting for some other computer (perhaps Yahoo or Whitehouse.gov) to send the image (gif or jpg) bits to you.
And having a faster PC on your desktop, with more memory, is, as you note, is no more useful than replacing your old Ford with a Ferrari while waiting for a back ordered part to show up at the local store. When the part finally comes in, three weeks later, you can get to the store and back in 3 minutes instead of 5 to pick it up. Whoopee doo. Or, in this case, when the bits finally get down to your PC, it can display the image in 300 microseconds instead of 800 microseconds.
You have either had too much Vodka Cranberry or not enough by forgetting to ping Jim. I just thought that FR was slow again and your co pingee would be here after I went to the store for my micro beer.
LMAO!
I never told you about my "co-pingee" friend that follows me around? He doesn't need an entry in my "To:" box!
That is something that you might not want to tell everyone on Free Republic.
So I pinged *all so you wouldn't have to.
