Run DMC's Jam Master Jay shot to death in Queens, NY

Posted on 10/30/2002 8:15:13 PM PST by BurbankKarl

Kind of shocked to hear this one...Run DMC kept their music relatively clean when all the Gangsta Rap hit in the last 80s...

NEW YORK — Legendary hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot and killed in Queens on Wednesday (October 30), according to the group's camp.

Police have confirmed that two men were shot inside a studio on Merrick Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. local time and say the victims have not been identified.

According to police, one man was dead on arrival after being rushed to a local hospital. Representatives for Run-DMC claim the victim was Jam Master Jay, a.k.a. Jason Mizell.

Police did not disclose the condition of the other victim.

Right before the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards in August, Darryl McDaniels, a.k.a. Jay's longtime musical compatriot DMC, said that the Queens group was going to hit the studio and road for an album and tour in commemoration of their 20th anniversary (see "Run-DMC Plan Return To B-Boyism On Anniversary LP").

Run-DMC, who recently wrapped a tour with Kid Rock and Aerosmith, were scheduled to perform Thursday (October 31) as part of the half-time festivities at a Washington Wizards home game.

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Gangster rap can be hazardous to your health. Again, you reap what you sow. Live by violent lyrics, die by violent actions.

Run-D.M.C. existed way before gangasta rap. They were upbeat and positive and were one of the pioneers of rap, whn rap was based on strong lyrics (i.e. poetry) and character, rather than profanity, sex, guns and drugs.

As a 28 year old white male, I am very upset.

He was the king of rock
there was none higher
sucker MCS would call him sire
to dethron his kingdom, you must use fire
He won't stop rockin until he retires

If you ask me it's suspiciously too close to the election. I can already pitcher a Democrat Party rally at his memorial service: "Let's win for DJ Jam Master Jay!!!"

Run-DMC was the Beatles of Rap, believe or not there was actaully a time in the 1980's for a few years when rap was actually non-violent and took some talent to preform and write, this guy was one of those people.

Normally music is not a cause for ones death.

Grim, but...

Ooh, let's go
Steve walks warily down the street
With the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet
Machine guns ready to go

Are you ready, hey, are you ready for this
Are you hangin' on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat - yeah

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, eh
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think I'm going to get along
Without you when you're gone
You took me for everything that I had
And kicked me out on my own

Are you happy ? Are you satisfied ?
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Look out

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, eh
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

Hey
Oh take it
Bites the dust - bite the dust hey
Hey
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust, ow
Another one bites the dust, hey hey
Another one bites the dust, heeey
Ooh show down

There are plenty of ways that you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him
You can cheat him
You can treat him bad and leave him
When he's down, yeah
But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you
I'm standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating to the sound of the beat
Oh yeah

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, yeah
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
Shoot out
Hey, alright

Truly it is sad when a young man dies.

Death is always bad news. Run-DMC is about the only rap group I know about. You may remember them, because they pretty much single handedly revived Aerosmith's career by remaking "Walk this Way," and including Aerosmith in the video.
