Not really. Minnesota Republicans are all over the map. There is a strong and vocal conservative wing (pro-life, pro-gun, anti-big government, anti-tax). Occasionally a popular politician emerges from these ranks (ex-Senator Rod Grams for example). There are your typical "moderate" (i.e. liberal) Republicans. They tend to be quite popular in their own district, but not state wide (Congressman Ramstead for example). But popular Republicans in Minnesota have to basically go it alone. There is no single formula. At the same time conservative Grams was elected to the Senate, the very moderate Arne Carlson was wildly popular as governor.
About the only thing that unites Republicans broadly in this state is rejecting the lefty lunacy (Green politics, "livable wage" laws, anti-Americanism) that's coming to dominate the DFL.
Personal traits, like honesty, trustworthiness, and likability carry a lot more weight here than many other parts of the country.
The next time a RAT drops from the sky or soemthing just as tragic, look for more of the same. What we saw the other night was nothing more than the RATS testing the perimeter, with the media being a part of the training exercise.
In general Minnesotas educational system is evenly good. This means that people are well educated across the spectrum unlike other many parts of country. This results in a population that functions a lot like one big suburb. Strong work ethic, interest and the ability to discern BS from fact.
Then couple this with a strong mix of German and Scandanavian ethnic background, and the social concern of that part of the world.
In Minnesota there is a lot of pressure to conform to the system and to live there requires you give up a lot of individuality. The reward for doing this is that you live in a pretty safe place where everything actually works, govt, roads, parks, workplace, etc.
And even more importantly, it is a place where good ideas rise to the top regardless of who thought of them which is why so many major corporations have started and prospered there.
