DAY ONE: MONDALE GOES NEGATIVE
Thu Oct 31 2002 17:32:31 ET

A new negative radio ad against Minnesota Republican Senate candidate Norm Coleman was launched just hours after former Vice President Walter Mondalee agreed to run for Senate.

Text of Ad, obtained by DRUDGE:

It sent thousands of good paying Minnesota jobs to China and Mexico.

Free trade has led to 36 bankruptcies in the steel industry alone.

And where was Norm Coleman when 1200 jobs were lost at LTV steel mining in Aurora because of the illegal dumping of steel?

And by the way, ask Norm Coleman about Lawson Software and Consceco Financial, two corporations that received millions in public subsidies while he was mayor of St. Paul.

These corporations have already laid off a total of 745 workers since Norm subsidized them. Don't let Norm Coleman do to Minnesota what he did to St. Paul.

Call Norm Coleman and tell him that before he makes any more campaign promises about creating jobs, he should start protecting the ones we already have.

end

Whenever you hear the line "call Sen. Nogood and tell him..." it's an "issue advocacy ad." I doubt this was put out by Mondull, but it surely pleases him.

Ironically, the kind of "campaign finance reform" that he and the other Dems are so obsessed with would ban these kinds of ads this close to the election. How ironic, the kind of ads the Dems want to ban would cripple their pinch-hitter strategy in New Jersey, and sink Mondull's chances.

But when are Democrats ever intellectually consistent?

I have some campaign slogans for him;

Vote Mondale, he doesn't suck as bad as you think he does.

What other old guy can you count on now that Matlock has been cancelled.

Drool and plenty of it.

No, this can't be, I heard him make a statement yesterday that he wanted to return the Senate to bipartisan decency, instead of the nasty vile bickering place it is.

Campaigns only go negative if they need to reduce the other sides turn our. Negative ads are designed to reduce support for the other guy. Mondale is not trying to increase his vote, he is trying to reduce Colemans vote.

Trying to reduce Colemans vote is a heck of a gamble. Republicans are mad. Mondale attacking him is an indication that mondale has a problem. Too many Coleman voters and not enough mondale voters and no voters left to get.

Bet the farm that the Democrats have been doing tracking polls since last saturday. If they looked good for Mondale every media outlet in the nation would have them.

There is nothing that the Modale campaign would like more than a million stories that the Wellstone family memorial had not rubbed off and hurt mondale. If it had not hurt Mondale at the polls we would know it loud and clear. If we are not hearing what the polls say in this vital race, then the polls do not favor Mondale.

As far as Coleman is concerned the more Repubicans think it will take every single voter voting to win, the better. The last thing Coleman wants is publicity that says he is winning. He wants turn out.

At this stage it is Mondale that needs the momentum not Coleman.

If truth be told by all, it's the congress that's running the businesses out of the country and costing jobs. Too many taxes and regulations, quotas and the like. It isn't fair for Mondull to blame one person. After all, would he want to have his record brought to light?

I said it when he and GF ran and, I reiterate now, "Let's Not Put America On the Fritz!"

This is a good issue for them dems, except what is the difference between exporting jobs and importing foreign workers? Not much in my book. Are the dems now going to support reduced immigration as well? Doubt it. Nice try anyway.

Coleman has the momentum. I am in Minnesota. Mondale decision not to debate will hurt him even more. I am astounded that the RATS are repeatedly misjudging the public mood.

Coleman is with Cheney tomorrow, Laura Bush on Sat, President Bush on Sunday, and Guiliani on Monday. Talk about heavy hitters.

Yep. Wellstone was a hard lefty and many of his fans were probably as disgusted as us with the farce of a "memorial". Also, the absentee ruling where all Rats are facing a do over is not going to help them. Meanwhile, the GOPers are fired up, p*ssed and working their butts off. I live in California and got a call from the MN GOP for $$ to help with poll watching. The Rats overplayed their hand and it is wonderful to see. Go Coleman Go....

Issue advocacy groups (e.g. unions, NOW) would be able to advertise all they want. But a candidate or political party would be prohibited from responding to the ads. And this reform was supposed to take the special interests out of politics. What a joke!!! It actually empowered special interests far beyond their influence at present.

Nice. The hilarious thing is that they are campaigning against a Party that is bashing Clinton's signing of NAFTA. Shouldn't someone tell that radio advocacy group that their ad is bashing one of their own?!

"Don't let Norm Coleman do to Minnesota what he did to St. Paul [Wellstone]"

I have no doubt this ad was designed to link Coleman with the death of the Dems "saint" in a subliminal way. They probably have a rally cry, "Remember the RATS!" and have used subliminal ad techniques ever since.

Brit Hume said it was put out by the unions. That Coleman had no vote in NAFTA but that the truth didn't seem to matter to the union.

Also mentioned was that Mondale said he was in favor of Wellstone's vote to give the United Nations veto power over United States foreign policy.

Mondale has a good face for radio! LOL!!

The text of that ad is almost verbatim of the attacks currently being run against Mitt Romney in Massachusetts. Just switch the names and places, and the lies, half truths, misstatements remain the same. Has the smell of Clinton and his handpuppet McAuliffe all over it.

New commercial:

It sent thousands of good paying Minnesota jobs to China and Mexico and prolonged the cold war.

Incredibly high interest and taxes have led to hundreds, even thousands of bankruptcies in U.S. industries.

And where was Walter Mondale when American hostages were held for over a year because of the ineffective and pathetic foreign policy of Jimmy Carter?

And by the way, ask Walter Mondale why he was laughing it up at a so-called memorial service for the deceased Paul Wellstone, and buddying up with Bill Clinton, a man that committed adultery with his daughter.

Carter/Mondale/Clinton caused the loss of thousands of jobs with their high interest rates and tax policies. Don't let Walter Mondale do to Minnesota what he did to the entire United States as Vice President.

Call Walter Mondale and tell him that before he makes any more campaign promises about anything, he should apologize for the damages he did twenty five years ago. Tell him to stay on the sidelines like a good retiree.
