GOP’S SIMON IN DEAD HEAT WITH DEMOCRAT GRAY DAVIS

WASHINGTON, D.C. ¾ With only four days until the election, GOP nominee Bill Simon has pulled to a statistical dead heat with incumbent Democrat Gray Davis, who appears unable to rally above the 45 percent mark in the California governor’s race.

While polls vary, Davis has remained unable to rise above the low 40s in his re-election bid - a factor that media analysts and pundits believe is dangerous for the incumbent.

An overnight field poll conducted on October 30 shows Republican Simon leading Gray Davis by three points - 42 percent to 39 percent. The survey conducted by the Polling Company, Inc. used a sample of 500 likely voters.

The poll indicates a growing surge for the Republican nominee. A similar poll conducted by the widely read FIELD poll reported Simon trailing by seven points - 41 percent to 34 percent.

In other good news for Simon, the new survey shows Davis’ unfavorable ratings at 57 percent - the highest negative rating of any governor in the country.

National Republican leaders credit Davis’ drop in the polls to a combination of factors, including his ongoing mismanagement of the state budget and energy crisis - as well as a recent decision by a federal judge to unseal documents involving a major racketeering scandal.

That, coupled with an extremely strong grass-roots outreach by the Simon campaign stretching state-wide, has helped push Simon back in the lead with only four days remaining.

Governor John G. Rowland (CT), chairman of the 27-member of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), welcomed the latest polling news - and strongly reiterated his support for Simon.

“Bill Simon has an outstanding record of public and private service. Voters are recognizing that this election offers a choice: to continue the failed policies of the current administration or to embrace the reforms that California so desperately needs. I am believe that Bill Simon is the best choice for California and that he will be prevail on Election Day,” said Rowland.

“The latest poll is great news not only for Republicans, but for every single resident of California,” said RGA Vice Chairman Bill Owens (CO). “Bill Simon represents a common sense approach to revitalizing California’s struggling economy - and he will deliver on his promise to keep education as his No. 1 priority.”

With Davis’ fundraising prowess, and the inherent powers of the incumbency fully behind him, RGA leaders cautioned that the race remain fiercely competitive.

However, the new poll could indicate the turning point of the campaign, said RGA Executive Director Ed Tobin. “The latest numbers are a positive indication that voters are rebelling against Governor Davis’ unrelenting abuse of power and neglect. At the same time, they realize that Bill Simon is an honest and proven reformer who put California back on the right track” said Tobin.

This year, there are 36 governors’ races; of those, the GOP is defending 23 seats - and Democrats are defending eleven. Davis is one of five Democratic governors who are seeking re-election.

Tobin noted that all GOP incumbent governors are poised for re-election, while all five Democrat incumbents are at risk of losing their re-election bids.

“The RGA is proud to support Bill Simon and we are eager to welcome him into the GOP fold. He is an excellent candidate - and he will make an excellent governor of California,” Tobin said.

Founded in 1963, the RGA is the official political and public policy organization of America’s Republican governors and governors-elect.

I visited California recently and had a chance to see both the Davis ad and the Simon ad on TV. I remember a line that Davis used in his ad that goes "You may not agree with everything I've done.........." Boy oh boy is THAT ever an understatement! I thought hey thanks Gov. Davis for reminding voters how you have ruined California. I hope the voters remember your ad come election day.

On the other hand, the Simon ad demanded your full attention. It also reminded voters what ole Gray out Davis has done to california. GO SIMON!!!

Instead of burying Wellstone the other day, perhaps the rats buryed themselves. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of folks. The tidal wave of resentment from the party crowd's crass behavior will have a more profound impact than 9/11.

I think this race is winnable. This race reminds me alot of when Pataki pulled a great upset in New York over Cuomo in 1994. This race is very similiar. Democratic leaning state, Cuomo was known but disliked as is Davis, Pataki and Simon never did anything to distinguish themselves, yet Pataki won as can Simon because people just wont be able to pull the trigger for Davis. I know many people in California who just despise Gray. This race will be close.
