Democrats fretted after their rout in the midterm elections that the black voters they always take for granted didn't show up at the plantation Tuesday. Now San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi is treating Rep. Harold Ford Jr. in a way that gives new meaning to the term "house slave."
"This race is over," Rep. Pelosi, D-Calif., sneered today after lodging a few potshots at the 32-year-old Ford about his youth.
Ford, D-Tenn., wants to replace Dick Gephardt as House minority leader because Pelosi is too "liberal." Far left is more like it.
Incoherent
"The American people were sending us a message on Election Day," said Ford. "Our message has not been coherent and cogent enough.''
Moderate Democrat Rep. Martin Frost dropped out of the race today and backed Pelosi - we'd love to hear the details of that little deal. But just the day before, he noted:
"There are an awful lot of Democrats who are very uneasy about the party moving sharply to the left and who want a party that's in the middle that speaks strongly and confronts the Republicans. I think that her politics are to the left, and I think that the party, to be successful, must speak to the broad center of the country.
'Our Values'
Pelosi launched into a diatribe against Republicans today and concluded, "I am convinced that the American people share our values and our hopes for the country."
Yes, Tuesday's elections prove that the American people share the values of the San Francisco Democrats.
Newsday columnist and Fox News contributor Jim Pinkerton observed, "The situation is a lot like what Democrats went through in 1968 to '72." Anti-war Democrats took over the party and ran South Dakota leftist George McGovern for president in 1972. McGovern was crushed.
If, as expected, the Democrat establishment spurns Ford, it will only further alienate the black voters it treats as its chattel.
Lame-duck Rep. Cynthia McKinney, of all people, had a sensible comment in an article Thursday in the Washington Times about why blacks didn't rush to the polls this year.
"While the national pundits postulate on the reasons why minority voters didn't turn out, minority voters themselves know the truth," she said. "For generations, the Democratic Party has taken the minority vote for granted."
Note to Harold Ford Jr.: There's room for you in the Republican Party.
In addition, if this is true (it probably is), it only confirms what a lot of people were saying about Pelosi. She's a jerk. Really, really unpleasant. Conservative democrats aren't going to stick around under her leadership, there will be a mass exodus from the Democratic Party.
Those new leaders? Harold Ford, Jr., Ron Kirk, Carl McCall.
Eh, guess not...
Can we now start a list of blacks the Democrats have been dissing lately?
McCall
Alan Page
Colin Powell
Condi Rice
now Harold Ford, Jr...
Seems the Dems are just intolerant unless blacks act like the house slaves.
Ford is Al Gores sock puppet. He is one of the more liberal congressman. He is very leftists. He wants to position himself to take over when Pelosi is a giant failure. Every one knows she is going to be a bust.
In the last 10 years the the Democrats have been Gerrymandered into 192 very very Democratic seats. There are about 11 seats that are not real leftist. The result is that very very leftist Democrats get elected to those seats.
Once Gephardt is gone, the very very socialist leftist nature of the house Democrats will be shown.
Ford was sent out to make the case that not all Democrats are lefist wackos. The fact is 90 percent are. . They think the MEDIA is going to have to be reminded that all DEMOCRATS are not LEFIST WACKOS.
If the Democrats turn sharply to the left they will go well to the left of the media. They may go far to the left of the media.
That could cause the media to almost be unbiased.... If they start to see the left not as Daxchle, Gephart, and Gore but Pelosi and Conyers and some more wackos.. ther media coverage could almost get fair.
Gore Knows he can't stop Pelosi.. He just wants to make the case that all Democrats are not Pelosi. The problem is the elected house members are.
Ford is far to the left of Mondale and Wellstone. And in comparison he looks conservative. That is scary.
Lord, preserve this belief! Amen.
Don't forget Maynard Jackson, the man cut out of the DNC chairmanship so that they could give the post to Terry McAuliffe. To be fair, though, from the brilliant leadership and keen political acumen Terry has demonstrated since then it's obvious he was chosen purely on merit, and not because he was a rich white crony of rich white guy Bill Clinton.
The Democrats have just about 'victimized' themselves into a box.
