The problem with Broome County's social services is women of low morals and their drug-dealing, abusive boyfriends, said the chairwoman of the county committee that oversees the Department of Social Services.

Further, said Legislator Wanda Hudak of Endicott, the solution to the abusive boyfriends is "a 25-cent bullet."

I disagree, mainly because I don't think you can find a 25-cent bullet anymore. Can you?

Sure. A brick of 500 .22 rimfire (plenty of power for the task) is about $10 plus tax on sale. $.02 each.

This is only wrong in Orwell's America.

The lady speaks the unvarnished truth and it is not acceptable. What a shame. When I lived in that area, it was common practice for women to wear out their welcome in PA, then move across the NY state border and be welcomed with open arms. In many cases their boyfriends also migrated with them.

I'm sure that all those people on welfare simply suffer from low morals, and that the following has nothing to do with their status:

Binghamton is at the other end of the spectrum from Albany: it has been in recession more than any other upstate metro area examined. The area experienced three distinct recessions in the 1980s linked to volatility in its computer-related electronic components industry. Decline in this dominant industry led to a one year recession in 1985, followed by a very long recession beginning in 1988—a full two years before the rest of the country entered the 1990-91 recession. That recession lasted over four years, ending in 1992, and was followed by another episodelasting over a year, ending in 1996. Over this prolonged recessionary period, employment in electronic components and accessories dropped by about one-half, and manufacturing jobs declined by more than one-third. Overall, the Binghamton economy spent more time contracting in the 1990s than expanding, and was on a downward trend roughly from 1988 to 1996. Its latest recession began in May 2001.

Yuck. You can't do anything with that other than have it lodge under the skin and cause a real nasty infection.

Many of the people in the Binghamton area on social assistance were moved to Binghamton by Gov. Cuomo and former mayor Crab from the NYC area to lesson the load on NYC's social services.

And the economic situation of the Southern Tier is a self inflicted one caused by years of running roughshod on the taxpayers, pitting the elderly community against the younger residents with the elderly winning and the young (myself included) moving the hell out, and the importation of criminals and government dependents from NYC.

Did they use boxcars for this move or did Cuomo and Crabb (there's a helluva name for a law firm!) drive these people from NYC themselves? Whether the economic wounds are self-inflicted or not, they are real, and responsible for a lot of the people needing social services.

Just sit in court for one day and observe the domestic violence and dependency hearings.
You'll conclude that Wanda Hudak is 100 percent right.
