Exploding Beer Cans Fly Out Of Burning Building (HMBA!)

EAST PETERSBURG, Pa. -- A 25-year-old Lancaster County business went up in flames Thursday as fire quickly engulfed part of a beer distribution business in East Petersburg.

At one point, flames could be seen from one-half mile away, and exploding beer cans were flying out of the roof.

The fire destroyed Bear Beer Distributor offices. Both floors of the offices are now completely burned out.

The two-alarm fire did very little damage to the rest of the building, including the warehouse.

Employees said the fire started about 12:45 p.m. They first heard a crackling sound, and the fire spread quickly.

Four people were inside the offices when the fire started. They reportedly tried to put out the fire with two fire extinguishers, but couldn't stop the flames.

"It was just engulfed in smoke right away, flames everywhere. The beer started flying, but we ... called 911 first and got all the cars out of the way and got everybody safe," employee Deb Logue said.

The fire is still under investigation, but employees believe it was an electrical problem. There is no word on a damage estimate.

Not as much as standing downwind from the incinerators in FL when they burned the maribooty from captured ships.

I watched a guy who walking down the pier counting the wooden slits. He wasn't however, watching where he was going and walked right off the end and fell into the ocean. The moral? When you're out of slits, you're out of pier.

My Dad served in the Navy for 20 years after he graduated from Annapolis in 1950. During a tour on the USS Saint Paul, he found out that the guy running the incinerator was hiding beer in the incinerator, and that the Chief Master At Arms was waiting to pounce.

Dad had to do a zone inspection on the incinerator, and he decided to save this young sailor's neck. He looks over the incinerator compartment, nods in satisfaction, then points to the large quantity of trash in the dumpster outside and tells the sailor in charge of the incinerator to burn the trash, "to make sure the incinerator is functioning properly." The sailor knows the jig is up, and proceeds to shovel the trash in and light it off.

Dad told me that it was like the greeting Bedcheck Charlie got off Wonsan at 2300 every night: the bottles sounded like 40mm shells going off :o)

The master-at-arms (whom EVERYONE from the skipper on down despised because he was vindictive and petty) was really put out when he didn't find the beer...

I didn't know this place had a fire. ..........Good.......

I travel to Lancaster on business and pick up a case on the way home to Hershey/Harrisburg. All Lancaster beer distributors got together and their prices are 2-5 bucks higher per case.

It would have been a pleasure to be there to see the Rocket Beer.

Yeah, but what about the beer!!!????

No one ran in to rescue the beer? What's this country coming to?

Check the trunks of those cars that were so hastily moved. I'll bet a few cases made it to safety...
