Algeria 'kills top al-Qaida leader'

25/11/2002 - 16:57:58

An Islamic militant killed by Algerian security forces in a raid two months ago has been identified as a top al-Qaida operative for Africa, Algeria’s official news agency reported today.

Emad Abdelwahid Ahmed Alwan, alias Abu Mohammed, was shot and killed in the September 12 raid in the eastern Batna region, 270 miles east of the capital Algiers, the official APS news agency said.

The body of Alwan, a Yemeni, was identified after a two-month investigation by government experts, the report said. He was a top al-Qaida leader for northern and western Africa, it said.

Algeria’s military is fighting a ten year insurgency by Islamic militants, which has claimed more than 120,000 lives. Raids by soldiers on suspected militant hideouts are common.

This part deserves repeating:"Algeria’s military is fighting a ten year insurgency by Islamic militants, which has claimed more than 120,000 lives. Raids by soldiers on suspected militant hideouts are common."

Isn't amazing that the mediots in charge of the NY Slimes, DC Compost or ABCNNBCBS never commented about: the Islamofascists in Algeria had a preference for slitting the throats of women and children....

Nice organization chart of al-Qaida here.

Now all we need to know is how much of a reward there is...

Osama is probably pink mist by now. The "we think he's alive, we have his voiceprint" stuff sounds like pure BS to me.

"I wonder why Mullah Omar isn't shown or do you keep a seperate scorecard for the Talibums?"

The Taliban is an al-Qaeda affiliate group and construction of those lists are still in the preliminary stages. Probably the most complete partial lists I have are for the Taliban, Abu Sayyaf, and the Chechens.

"Appreciate the info. I knew what 'al-Iraqi' or 'al-Libi' meant, but now I know "al-Masri" means from Egypt."

No problem. Most of al-Qaeda's leadership is Egyptian, Saudi, or Yemeni, so those are the likely points of origin for most of these guys.

BTW, my E-Mail addy is angelus_errare2001@yahoo.com

Oh, and mikegi is free to update his scorecard with this info.

I dunno. If we got him, why not say we got him? The pilot (or UAV driver) who got him would be this war's Tom Lanphier in a heartbeat (not to mention he'd stand to collect $25 million from the DOJ and another $1 billion from the private sector dead-or-alive reward on bin Laden).

It seems to me that we winged him pretty good at Tora Bora, but he got away - probably to Iran (which would help to explain the mullahs recent decision to start hiring outside security for their regime).

Because he's the perfect all-purpose excuse for bombing any real estate we don't like: "we heard Osama was in there." And, of course, the bad guys will announce "OSAMA HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!"

You have a point.

Still, sooner or later, al-Qaeda would be announcing that their leader had been martyred. I think he was wounded at Tora Bora, and is still out there.

I just want to get that guy.
