Man Jailed For Bush Remark

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A man who made a remark about a "burning Bush" during the president's March 2001 trip to Sioux Falls was sentenced Friday to 37 months in prison.

Richard Humphreys of Portland, Ore., was convicted in September of threatening to kill or harm the president and said he plans to appeal. He has said the comment was a prophecy protected under his right to free speech.

Humphreys said he got into a barroom discussion in nearby Watertown with a truck driver. A bartender who overheard the conversation realized the president was to visit Sioux Falls the next day and told police Humphreys talked about a "burning Bush" and the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on Bush and lighting it.

"I said God might speak to the world through a burning Bush," Humphreys testified during his trial. "I had said that before and I thought it was funny."

Not sure about this one. You can't threaten the President, I just don't know if that's what this guy did here.

There was an earlier thread about a guy in Denver taking pictures of the Hotel Dick Cheney was staying at, as well as the USSS sharpshooters on the roof. He should be prosecuted. This guy? I dont know, either.

This story has been discussed here previously with far more information than presented in this little quip. This guy wants Bush dead, and is just the type to try it himself.

I think all threats must be taken seriously. We need W and the free world to exist, for us, for our future. This guy thought he was being cute. That'll show him.

Post 9/11, we live in a different world.

Did they find the flammable liquid at his home or in his car? It's good to know the Secret Service is on their job. Looney's are everywhere.

This story doesn't give much information, but the jury must have had evidence other than the word of a bartender.

I would never vote to convict a guy who said what is attributed to him in this article. Now I'd like to hear what the bartender said he overheard and get the rest of the story.

I understand the story about the photographer is dubious, at best.

My first impression of reading this story was the punishment was excessive, unless there's more to it than they're saying.

Funny haha, or funny gay?
After 37 months in jail, probably the latter.

CBS's "60 Minutes" reported Sunday that President Bush gets more than 200 threats a week, about 50 of which are taken seriously by the Secret Service. - Link

Not funny. The President isn't blaming the inflammatory rhetoric coming from Clinton, Daschle and those in the vast left-wing media, either. Our President is the number one target of kooks and serious terrorists in the world.
