Jen, thanks for the ping to this article. Thanks also to you Tonk for pinging me to this.
Longcut....this is so meaningful and sensitive. From the first day I was acquainted with you and Mrs. LC I knew you had a special sort of sensitivity. You have taken the time here to express the patriotism that is aroused in so many of us, and it is so appreciated! These rare moments in our lives that actually work to define who we are...they are special. To be able to verbalize that so well is a gift. Thanks so much for sharing that ability with us.

The WTC changed my life too. It made my husband and I go out and buy a giant US Flag Hot Air Balloon, take it around the country and pass out Constitutions to whoever has a willingness to learn. We had talked about it before the massacre, but it was more of a dream. After 9/11 we decided that we had no choice. So far, it has been an amazing success. The people of this country are eager to learn about the Constitution. Far more eager than you would think if you listened to the media. The flag is immensely popular, and the people in this country are very receptive to LEARN about what makes this country great!
Thanks for the wonderful story Long Cut.

I am a bit older than you (22 at the time) but I visited the WTC close to when you did on July 4th 1979. I didn't get that coin but have kept the memories of that visit and my admission ticket stub. I was up at the top as sunset was falling and watching the beginning of the fireworks displays. Quite a sight. I later walked through Battery Park while a mini fire fight with firecrackers was erupting. I then took one of the wildest cab rides in my life uptown. Beat any amusement park ride for thrills.

Thanks for the ping to this OUTSTANDING commentary.
Black Tuesday cemented what your father gave to you. For many it re-kindled what was instilled in our youth from an earlier generation. For another group it just added more fuel to the fire that burns deep within.

Fuzzy monitor, LC. One never knows how children will be affected by the things adults show them. You write so well, LC. Thanks for the peak into your childhood.

Thank you for the info about covering mirrors. I was going nuts trying to remember where the custom came from. :-)

I thought this deserved a thread of its' own At least.
Two things should memorialize the Trade Center attacks: one, a newer, bigger, better, shinier, even more triumphant Trade Center. And two, a lot of crumbled, smoking craters where Terror used to dwell.

Beautiful. Thank you.
I beat you to the WTC by a few months, though. April 1978. I was twenty years old, and it was the first day of my first trip to the city. I went to Windows on the World that evening with my parents and my city-dwelling aunt and uncle. I was wearing a very cutting-edge-at-that-time dress (suitable for the dance floor, since disco was still very big), and in New York in 1978, I was of legal drinking age. I remember wishing that I'd been there with a date instead of with my family. :D
The view at night was like nothing I'd ever seen before. It was a very clear night, and you could see the lights all the way to Connecticut. Spectacular.
I knew that night that I simply had to move to New York as soon as possible. And that turned out to be the day after I graduated from college.
I'd give about a million dollars for a photo of our table at Windows on the World that night. It was a turning point in my life, and I knew it even at the time.

You know I love the way you write, 'Cut, but this takes it to another level.
Know that I am praying for your safety and success at all times - and I'm sure I'm far from alone.
I can't thank you enough for sharing this. It is absolutely inspirational. (And it really ought to be in a magazine or newspaper.)
