America is the most popular destination for emigrants in world history. The ideals of individualism and freedom are stronger here than blood ties or mere regional loyalties. Our diversity has fed our inventiveness, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. But what if that openness was a suicidal mistake? Even before the current conflict with terrorism, there was debate over how many immigrants -- and from what lands -- we can comfortably absorb without fragmenting American culture. In addition, we now know that cells of foreign terrorists have been active here, the government ineffectual in screening them out. Can America keep out its enemies without betraying the Statue of Liberty's promise to shelter people yearning to breath free? And if America does not act to protect its borders, how long will it remain the sort of place the poor and unfree of the world long to be?

BORDER DISORDER
California Coalition for Immigration Reform meeting
Special Guest Speaker: Michelle MalkinGarden Grove, California
November 27, 2002
I'm not given a good reason very often for braving the dubious charm and non-existent relaxation of the L.A.cious freeway system unless absolutely necessary.
I'm even less inclined to indulge in the Rush To Road Rage the night before Thanksgiving, America's Biggest Getaway Day. Usually I'm giving praise to the Lord in advance for sparing me the necessity of enduring yet another ride through congestion worse than that of a three-pack-a-day tobacco addict.
But when one of California's leading (and most controversial, being outspokenly politically incorrect) immigration reform organizations calls a meeting with a feastful of special guests - with the main course being a speech by columnist and best-selling author Michelle Malkin...
