They were filing for permanent residency, and to their knowledge were doing everything legally through the system,"

Although the temporary visas expired, if the family is actively "in the system" for obtaining permanent residency, it may be an INS error to immediately deport them. This may be another case of the right hand (enforcement) not knowing what the left hand (the legal granting of immigration benefits)is doing. There was no overt wrong-doing warranting deportation if they were legally seeking permanent residency. Any immigration experts out there to shed some legal light on this situation?

These freakin jack booted thugs turn their eye at the 3 million illegals from Mexico each year, and they go after a hard working WHITE family, who was obviously contributing to society. This pisses me off, The Death of the West is coming........

"I've got a friend from Britain who came over here and married his internet girlfriend, has now been here for several years, and the mountains of paperwork and costs are ridiculous..."

Then he did it wrong... I married a woman from Mexico (the rules are the same for all LEGAL immigration issues) and it wasn't that bad. There are 3 sets of forms and it's a few hundred bucks... IF you get married here. Bringing an alien spouse over is a big can of worms, yes.

The process of changing status is long.

He married an American woman (here in the U.S.) he'd met online and came over here to see. They've since had a child as well.
My thinking was he should have applied before they got married, but, in theory that really shouldn't matter.
Since 9/11 the usual peanut butter avalanche of bureaucratic paperwork takes even longer, and according to him, costs more too.

I just realized something. The Saks were living out in the open and INS could find them. "Just like shooting fish in a barrel."

It had nothing to do with race. They were the only ones they could find.

Re your #60. "Why make the assumption he isn't"

If you recall, my first question was :Is he here legally?

What state do you live in, that you do not automatically question an immigrants legality?

I live in a border state, sort of.In Florida, any Cuban is assumed to be here legally.Any other "immigrant" nationality,is now generally considered suspect. That includes Canadians,Palestinians,Saudi,Mexican, any number of South Americans,Nigerian, Somalian etc.

Before you decry me as "racist",ponder the south Florida "Haitian run for illegal immigration" widely publicised just before the elections last month.

We have a large cottage industry going on with companies "contracting" labor from fly by night employment agencies who supply manual laborers for less than half the cost of reputable and honest temporary labor firms.Since I have always kept in touch with such firms, as one never knows when a pink slip will appear, and I can not afford to go a week without paid employment,I may have a different view of the low-mid range labor market than do you.

It is the latest version of indentured servants, bondsman, and basically imported slave labor.

I wont even get into the other obviously criminal versions involving prostitution and drugs. That side may just be a little too ugly for you to consider.Even if you consider yourself set financially, life has a way of turning on a dime.If your investments go bad, you lose your job, and still have a lot of bills to pay...you may just find yourself trying to compete for a low wage job just to keep food on the table and a roof over your head.Unless you have a trust fund, I can promise you a rude awakening.

Welcome to Amerika!

Boy you really like to make some big leaps and assumptions.
Yes you started by asking was he here legally, then the rest of your post continued on the premise he was- your general tone was pretty negative.
I would hope to be fair minded enough not to question someone's legality unless I had reason, regardless of my state or their nation of origin. Obviously I don't condone illegals, no matter where they are from - but I'm certainly going to give someone the respect I would want until they prove undeserving.
For the record I'm in upstate SC, which has a large Mexican population...nothing new, as they've been migrant workers in the south for decades.
I never called you racist, please don't put words in my mouth.
Also, since you know nothing of me or my life, don't assume I don't know how tough life can be.

There has been no indication in your previous posts that you differentuate between legal and illegal immigrants. As long as they work hard, is the only criteria you have used as the "how noble they are " argument.

You also spoke at length about young lazy single mothers who believe they are entitled to welfare.

You really make some leaps and assumptions. You appear to favor the "strawman" arguments.

I do not apologise for a "general tone" you label "negative".

Why do you feel so defensive? I have reviewed my posts and I see no actual personal attacks against you.I have asked a few questions, some of which you have answered, but it seems it is actually you who have decided to view questions as personal attacks.

I have no interest in continuing this non-discussion with you.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

lol I'm not being defensive. I've simply stated facts.
You could easily have made comments about the potential and direct economic (and related) threats to you posed by illegal immigration, without calling into question (your overuse of the word "may" doesn't make it any less so) my ability to understand your circumstances and the general problem. You could have assumed the opposite, that I do understand how difficult it can be to keep food on the table, especially in the face of what would be termed unfair competition.
actually you who have decided to view questions as personal attacks
You made statements, not questions. And, I didn't say they were attacks, I simply stated you shouldn't make assumptions.

As long as they work hard, is the only criteria you have used as the "how noble they are " argument
Wrong. While sympathetic to the plight of the Polish family, the rules are the rules, and it doesn't matter how noble you are. I guess you've not read the whole thread.

I made no strawman argument. I made comments about immigrants/non-immigrants based on my personal experience, which was relevant to the ongoing discussion about whites vs hispanics and the assimilation, nobility, etc of same.
I do not apologise for a "general tone" you label "negative".
That's fine, I didn't want or expect an apology.

It's a shame you feel the need to shut down a conversation simply because you are unable to follow logical points, and respond directly. I guess maybe you're not used to people who say what they mean and mean what they say.

Have a nice life :)

Sorry, but the law should apply to these people as well as anyone else.

I have no sympathy with the family. Rather, I am simply incredulous that THEY are being singled out when the law is flaunted outrageously every day.
