At a time when Americans of many faiths – and even no faith – gear up to celebrate Christmas this year, a first-grade teacher in Sacramento Co., Calif., says she's been ordered by her principal not to utter the word "Christmas" at school.

The 24-year education veteran, who wishes to keep her name and the school anonymous at this time, claims she and two fellow instructors were told that use of the word "Christmas" in the classroom or in written materials was now prohibited.

I didn't know it was that bad.

I wouldn't have known either if I hadn't read it on FR two years ago..

While I find the original subject of this discussion quite asinine, I have to wonder just who you mean by 'they' and from where you think that they will try to ban such things.

All day long. I would tell my child to be as obnoxious and in-your-face as possible saying Jesus Loves you and Are you saved?

I heard about a group of students who did this to a child because the boy did not say "Under God" during the pledge (mind you, he wasn't trying to force others not to say it and neither were his parents -- he simply chose not to say it).

Suffice it to say, his parents were not happy when they found out about it. Kids can be mean and everyone knows that, but that kind of harassment is inexcusable.

Fortunately the school did discpline the harassing students, and I hope that any school would disciline a students for harassing others for any reason, even religious ones.

(Mind you, mentioning Jesus is not harassment. Following someone around and constantly pestering them about Jesus and hell after they have told you that they are not interested is harassment.)

Teacher 'banned' from saying 'the word'.

This, 'banned' stuff happened all the time in Nazi Germany,....NEXT,...the PC 'camps'.

Nothing like a Nazi-Union.

If they tried to impose those regulations around here, you'd have people sorting out anything that had their name on it & then making midnight runs to the stone quarry's, river, and lakes to dispose of their garbage. Everything is biogradable given enough time.

But you can make Jay-Z honorary principal for a day...oh the virtues of the hip hop culture....i'm still waiting for someone to explain exactly that culture and why it is promoted as something that is cool and kids should look up to....also, what does "keeping it real" mean? is that a code word? me thinks so....

You know, people usually have to pay for trash removal when they write that check to the utility company. Looks like some people aren't getting their money's worth when they have to end up hauling their own trash away.

But, that would seriously impact the religious ethic of the ecology crowd.

I've got another friend who berated me for not recycling my papers. Then, I watched as she washed one shirt by itself in a washing machine and didn't set the water level to low. She also drives an SUV.

Maybe we should just give Commiefornia to the Mexicans. For all the faults of the illegals, at least they openly can practice their religion and do not care what the PC crowd says.

Just recently, In Yonkers they banned all XMAS decorations in the public schools......I'm sure there will be complaints about those type of shows promoting the XMAS spirit......I'm also being sarcastic about the whole situation.

This thing about banning Christmas is just the biggest insanity... You can say a lot of bad stuff about Europe, but as far as I know nothing of this sort has been happening yet. At least not in Norway.

The sad thing is that our government which is trying to impose a nation-wide smoking ban now cites the state of California as a glorious example of government regulation.

You are right and I would not want nor tolerate my child abusing other.

I'm thinking that as long as my child has the freedom to innocently wish someone a merry christmas, or say the word in some other context, to act normally.

But IF confronted by a teacher or official saying please don't say Christmas or to that effect. The response would be I can't comply with your request. And by the way, Merry Christmas. May God Bless you! Smile and walk away. What are they going to do? It would be better not to be too obnoxious about it.

My earlier post was a bit extreme. I was just considering the possibilities and was amused at the thought of some little kid screaming at the principal, "You're gonna BURN!" "Fear God!" Would make a good SNL skit.

But that would not benefit anyone. It might serve to make Christians look rude and aggressive. It is better to maintain poise and decorum while simultaneously resisting the tyrants. That way the other side looks bad.

"Good thoughts, Jason. That would work for the school, but can we go further? ACLU and People for the American Way, etc. are behind all this. How do we fight them effectively to gain the rights we had 10 years ago?"

I'm not the right one to ask. There is no simple answer. They are a big problem and it will take strong medicine to counteract their effects.

I find that comedy is better when it exaggerates reailty rather than mirrors it. Sadly, I brought up that kind of scenario specificaly because I've heard of it happening just as you describe.

As for asinine regulations restricting mention of the word 'Christmas', I'd ignore it. I wouldn't make a show of ignoring it, I simply would refuse to acknowledge that the rule exists. Regardless of my religious beliefs, I am aware that a number of people do believe that there is a divine entity that they call "God" and they believe that this "God" had a son named Jesus Christ and that they commemerate the birth of this son on a day in December and they call that commemeration December. Those are simple facts, and I hardly think that I could make them false by censuring anyone.

I followed up with the communications director of the Sacramento City School District. They are unaware of this and certainly do not approve of what the principal has done. It is not district policy. If she knew at what school it took place, she would do something about it. If anyone can get the name of the school, please let me know.
