One thousand US troops landed in Israel just before 8 a.m. Sunday. According to Israel Radio, the troops, with Patriot missiles, are to take part in a joint exercise with the IDF. Likewise, the US soldiers will remain in the country through any US-led attack against Iraq.

In related news, the IDF Home Front is to distribute instruction booklets to Israelis in the coming weeks. At the same time, exercises are being held by security forces, rescue services and at schools, the radio said.

If this is true;we should not be using our troops as human shields. - Tom

Those lucky bastards. I hope I end up in Israel if I'm activated. They'll get the red carpet treatment from the locals, including probably getting billeted in the homes of Israelis that volunteer a bed for them. I'll probably end up eating sand in Saudi dreaming of the day when I can drink a beer.

They were there during Gulf War I as well. It was their job to operate the Patriots that got most of the scuds. That'll be their job this time too and they'll do their job well. I seriously doubt they are being used as "human shields" since the Iraquis won't care about "human shields" only people who value life care about things like that.

I dont think they are human shields. Human shields are kindergarteners surrounded by Iraqi Hierarchy.

I agree. We should untie the Israeli's hands and let them smite the Iraqis if need be.

After a live-fire exercise in Kuwait over the weekend, about 1,000 US troops are expected to arrive in Israel, bringing with them the latest version of the Patriot missile – used with minimal success against Iraqi Scuds during the 1991 Gulf War. The Patriots will be deployed alongside a new anti-missile system, the Arrow, which was developed by the Israelis and the Americans.

Filling the bow with Ephraim bump!!!

My first thought when I read the headline was... Great duty! For the rest of us, it looks like more of the same: ragheads, camel jockeys and sand...

I made three "visits" there back in the 80's with the Navy (the longest was three weeks). You are right, we got treated like kings, anything we wanted, within reason of course. Made a good many friends in the IDF, and stayed in many of their homes. I felt like family.

COMMON VALUES

. . . With that in mind, perhaps the IDF might reign in their methods for as long as they are hosting our boys. Palestinians accuse Israeli security of making them choose which limb will be broken
