Those "Silly Attacks on Patty Murray
Seattle Times ^ | Editorial

Posted on 12/24/2002 7:45:41 AM PST by Kate in Palo Alto

THis is what the Seattle Times thinks of efforts to call Patty Murray to account:

Election time is the silly season, and state Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance and Congressman George Nethercutt already have started the shenanigans for the 2004 U.S. senate campaign.

Their gasbaggery last week over U.S. Sen. Patty Murray's conversation with a Vancouver, Wash., high-school class was all spin and distortion.

Wednesday, Columbia River High School honor students studying world history were treated to a discussion with their U.S. senator about world events and U.S. policy. Murray, a former teacher, noted many people in the Muslim nations view the United States with suspicion and posed a question:

"We've got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular around the world? Why are people so supportive of him in many countries that are riddled in poverty?"

She noted the wealthy bin Laden, believed to be an architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has established goodwill because over the years he built buildings, roads and other facilities for poor areas.

Silly attacks indeed. The woman is a menace to US intrests, she seems to be totally oblivious to work of groups like USAID, Peace Corps, and other govt funded programs that have provided hundreds of millions of dollars and manpower to help the world. Her logic is terribly flawed. IT would be like me arguing that John Wilkes Booth was a great actor, and except for that little incident in Fords theatre, he would have done more great things. The man was a murderer who killed a President, and Bin Ladin has and will kill thousands of Americans.Patty Murray needs to be buried on the bone pile of US history and the good folks of Washington state need to elect somebody who really loves and understands America.

Seattle is a pathetic little town full of socialists. I live across the lake in Redmond with the normal people.

Here is an article from the Seattle PI (Seattle Times' twin) that is related saying that a majority of people in Seattle are opposed to a war with Iraq: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/101303_poll24.shtml

Why not post the whole thing inasmuch as this isn't covered by the injunction?

She probed further: "How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?"

While Murray voted against Bush's war resolution, she supports the war on terrorism and wants bin Laden brought to justice.

Nevertheless, Vance's press release has Murray sending a message that the "United States somehow deserved or brought on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks."

Oh please, what nonsense!

A couple paragraphs later, Vance gets to his objective: "If Patty Murray really believes what she said, she should think twice about running for re-election."

Slow day around the office, Mr. Vance?

And Nethercutt, R-Spokane, released a statement full of innuendo, saying, "Congress is a place of debate. I guess we now know which side Sen. Murray will be debating from when Congress resumes."

Then Nethercutt, who voted in 1997 to withdraw from the United Nations, delivers his upshot: "I would welcome the chance to have a one-on-one debate with Sen. Murray on this topic."

Testing the political waters, congressman?

Fact is, Murray's information about bin Laden is right. The Associated Press quoted a bin Laden expert saying the senator's comments were "a generalization, but mostly accurate." Sen. Murray challenged bright students, who might be soldiers in the war on terrorism, to make sense of our nation's circumstances. How subversive!

Murray, a former teacher,

It has been noted by Thomas Sowell, that colleges of education have students with the lowest SAT scores and the highest GPAs. Someone once said to me, "If you want to go into education, don't be a teacher."

She noted the wealthy bin Laden, believed to be an architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has established goodwill because over the years he built buildings, roads and other facilities for poor areas.

Yes he did. They are all related to his terrorist camps. He is not the least bit philanthropistic. Not the least bit. The buildings are part of his camps, the roads lead to them, the facilities serve the terrorists.

What the Seattle Times neglects to mention is that Murray also credited OBL for building day care centers.

Day care centers?????

They are trying to diffuse this over the holidays so that it isn't a story that explodes in January. But Nethercutt will use it -- and effectively -- in 2004. It will be the first in a "Patty Murray is a complete and utter moron." campaign.

Hey, Booth was a great actor. Maybe the Tony's can find time to give him a lifetime achievement award.

Of course he built day care centers. Geez, do you think the 4 wives have time to take care of the children while they do their housework? Half their day is spent chasing the goat to get a glass of milk! Where the time to care for the kids?

Fact is, Murray's information about bin Laden is right.

Are they insane? The Taliban doesn't even let girls go to school. The only "schools" they have are ones in which they learn that Christians and Jews are the Infidel and should be slaughtered. Day Care Centers? They don't even let women out of the house...how stupid can they be? Hospitals? For who? Chechen Terrorists?

Murray should be removed from the Senate.

I'm not surprised that the SeaTimes can't bring itself to provide a direct quote concerning the most controversial portion of her statement.

She noted the wealthy bin Laden, believed to be an architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has established goodwill because over the years he built buildings, roads and other facilities for poor areas.

"Has established goodwill?" When in trouble, paraphrase and use passive voice.

The Associated Press quoted a bin Laden expert saying the senator's comments were "a generalization, but mostly accurate."

Note that as long as the SeaTimes quotes the AP, then an independent check on the veracity of the claim is unnecessary.

Notice they changed her words and took out the specific mentioning of schools and daycare facilities. Good example of liberal press covering for one of their own.

And Al Capone had soup kitchens for the poor and gave out dimes to street urchins. So what?

I guess Seattle should start building that statue.

Her logic is terribly flawed. Actually, it isn't her logic that is flawed, it's much deeper than that; 'lieberals' don't register on the Peace Corp if it doesn't fit their anti-American, blame America first reasoning process. Ms Murray is the proto-typical liberal puke who would be just as happy to see death and mayhem raining down upon this nation if it could be used to empower her twisted despotic democrat party and their agenda for what would be left after the catastrophe. She obviously reflects the majority opinion in Washington State, sad to say.

For one instant, I wanted to write a letter to the editor, but I felt (a) it would be pearls before swine and (b) noting that Murray mentioned day care facilities might actually make them look like complete idiots and thus they'd never print the letter.
