[history]
Despite legislation passed by the General Assembly earlier this year making it possible for Virginians to stop identity fraud, foreign nationals living in Virginia can renew their drivers' licenses without proving they are legal U.S. residents. "There is nothing in Virginia law that requires us [to ask] for that," Karen Rubey, director of driver services for the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), told The Washington Times earlier this month.

Well, as the Bush kids know, you don't have to go to Virginia to ger fake driver's licenses.
However, as the article points out, this is not about fake IDs, but real drivers licenses issued without proper authorization.
It is serious when a state government decides that it is not in their interests to promote compliance with federal law.
What about the reverse: the feds decide that it is too hard to comply with Virginia state law, don't follow zoning laws, have federal vehicles park whereever they want, etc.

Some demo-wench (elected official) from Alexandria actually started sobbing about the lives that would be destroyed if they required proof of legal residency for renewing driver's licenses.
I almost puked when I read that (in the washington compost, no less).

I agree!
Click here to send Gov Warner a message on this important issue.
I sent this message:
Dear Gov. Warner, I was SHOCKED to hear that foreigners who renew their drivers license in VA do NOT have to prove they are here legally. This is an OUTRAGE!! I STRONGLY urge you to support Senator O'Brien's bill to REQUIRE all foreigners to PROVE they are in the US legally EVERY TIME they get or renew their VA license. I am tired of VA being the place to get phony licenses for terrorists!!

Seven of the 19 terrorists who hijacked planes and killed roughly 3,000 Americans on September 11 had Virginia identification cards, even though they were not residents of the Old Dominion." Good morning, Old Dominion FReepers...please see Gopher Broke's post #7 for the link to Governor Warner's office and tell him...This MUST Be Addressed by the GOP Legislature during the upcoming session!!

From the article
Even worse, Mrs. Manel said, she got the brush-off when she complained to the DMV manager that she had not been asked to prove anything ?especially in the wake of September 11. "He was short with me. And all he said was, 'That's the way the commissioner of the DMV wants it,' " she told The Times. Earlier this year, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation requiring that people prove who they are with a birth certificate and photo identification.
It sounds to me like the Commissioner of the DMV needs to be replaced if not imprisoned. He's in direct violation of the law.

"Earlier this year, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation requiring that people prove who they are with a birth certificate and photo identification." Is this true? Did Warner sign this legislation into law? If so, I agree that the DMV commissioner needs to be replaced and tried for Dereliction of Duty!!

The article says the legislation requires proof, but the DMV claims they're not required to ask for it! Technically, if the DMV isn't in violation of the law, they're in violation of the spirit of the law. Newly-elected Sen. Jay O'Brien wants to take it further. Tougher restrictions died in the Senate last year so hopefully with his leadership this session, tougher restrictions will pass.
More restrictive government regulations for the majority of us law-abiding citizens thanks to a handful of criminals who abuse the system.

"...the legislation requires proof, but the DMV claims they're not required to ask for it!" Ridiculous State BureaucRATese...that DMV Commissioner deserves to be keel-hauled!!
I wish Senator O'Brien all the luck in the World and VA FReepers can help out with any uproar we need to create to make his legislation a reality!!

I believe the Virginia DMV held a series of quickly announced public hearing on Sept. 20-24 for public comments, most of the public was unaware of these meetings. Unfortunately, I was out of town. I believe their official line is that they need to study this issue, meaning they are really trying to set up a roadblock and keep this from becoming law. I am convinced Mark Warner and the Hispanic activist hate groups are working under the radar of the public to convince Virginia to accept the bogus marticular ids just like they did in New York recently and failed. Beware, these traitors know that Central Virginians would never accept this, but they have a friend in Mark Warner and most of the liberal, traitorous northern Virginia politicians. I found this website and I keep checking to see if any more public hearing are to be announced. I suggest everyone bookmark it.

I think the problem will be rectified, but he question is when will this happen. I have personally witnessed foreigners who can't even speak english applying for and receiving a driver's license by presenting an international license. They didn't have to take the test. I don't know if that is legal but the DMV employees are not uniformly diligent. OTOH when I wanted to license a home built trailer to haul around lawn mowers and such I ran into an impenetrable wall of bureaucratic rules. Go figger!

Warner's pretty much a LAME DUCK after this next legislative session, but he has this ridiculous idea that Virginians will vote fer him as Senator and this issue could be a dagger to the heart of his candidacy, IMHO. If he doesn't come around, we can always hang this issue around the neck of that slimey RAT-bastard, Tim Kaine, in the next gubernatorial contest!! Let's strike before they can get on the Right side of the issue!!

"...the question is when will this happen..." This being an election year in Ol' Virginny, I reckon it'll happen this legislative session or else the RATS're gonna git their arses handed to them in November.

There's a DMV office about a mile from my house. I can't say I've seen any third worlders hanging around, although Lyndon LaRouche supporters are usually standing outside, passing out leaflets.
