just simply pay us all so we don't have to go through the pain, suffering and humiliation of ever HAVING to look for a job
While I can understand your point, it isn't like live on UI is all roses. My benefits, the highest in the nation I believe, are 1/4 of what my salary was when I was working. I've sent out hundreds of resumes and haven't had a nibble, and the same is true of most high tech people here in Seattle. Part of the problem is that companies laid off their HR people and there's no one running the ship when they want to hire.

And I bet that you are steadfastly insisting on considering only jobs that pay you your former salary...
Nothing for less, not even temporarily.

I understand your plight and I'm sorry for it. However, you can take a job in the meantime and still look for a job that you really want. Who knows how long it will be before your particular area will be up and running, if ever. You may need to make a life change. Take a bit of a pay cut and try something else. Or else ... sorry...MOVE to a place where you may have some opportunity.

How many H1B's are still working in the US right now, does anyone know?

Well perhaps it's time for all the "high tech" folks to start thinking about changing careers. I'm so sick of this I can't find a job in my field crap. My hubby got laid off too--we took a big risk and did it voluntarily knowing it could come later without the severence pay. My husband found a job within 2 months and it did take adjusting from one area to another in his field to do it. He's been working now for a year with this firm and things are getting skimpy now since he makes less, but we are surviving and we BOTH are prepared to do what we have to to keep it together(including me working part time, he putting in a lot more hours, hubby switching jobs yet again, cutting back even more, etc) This has to be positively the whiniest bunch of folks from layoffs I've ever seen.
As for the lady crying because she may have to work nights--boo hoo. We had to do this the first 6 mos. of my daughter's life until we tied up some loose ends and I could stay home. This is incredible. I'm thinking this lady does not work at all and she's upset because she has to actually pick up a part time job to help make ends meet. Good grief, you do what you got to do lady--the government is not your husband when your real one isn't bringing home enough bacon and nobody is entitled to continue staying home when you must have two incomes to make it. If you are dissappointed with his performance in finding a job, take it up with him and stop trying to make the rest of American pay for you to stay home while hubby looks for exactly the same job and pay he had before. Forget about the politicians, the American people have become shameless and sound like a bunch of spoiled two year olds.
