BRASILIA, Brazil - Brazil's first elected leftist president took office Wednesday, pledging to ease the agony of countless impoverished and hungry Brazilians who inhabit South America's biggest country, a fertile land the size of the continental United States.

Choking back tears as he spoke to an estimated 200,000 supporters, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said there was no excuse for hunger among any of Brazil's estimated 50 million poor.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez watched from the front row.

A former radical who used to espouse socialism...

"Used to"?

Sounds like the AP reporter was almost overcome by emotion, himself.

Brazil's first elected leftist president took office Wednesday

Brazil has had many elected leftist presidents since the last unelected leftist dictator left power.

Lula will obviously use the success in Zimbabwe as his guide to prosperity for Brazil.

The liberals (Democrats) in the US don't get it. Distribute the wealth make everyone equal, will not work, never has worked, never will work.

Da Silva said he would fight inflation,

I shudder to think of the 'solutions' he's going to unveil.

boost efforts to give land to the poor

Does he mean give government land to the poor, or take land from big landowners and give it to the poor? It is probably a guarantee that he WILL NOT get the government out of the way of entrepreneurs and businesspeople, which is always the key to a successful economy.

"Brazilians cheer Lula's inauguration"

In related news, chickens worldwide resoundingly approved the re-appointment of Colonel Sanders as poultry czar.

The fools, we'll wait a year or two and see if they're still cheering, or are they pleading like their Venezuelan brethren to kick out the commie creep.
