BRASILIA, Brazil - Brazil's first elected leftist president took office Wednesday, pledging to ease the agony of countless impoverished and hungry Brazilians who inhabit South America's biggest country, a fertile land the size of the continental United States.
Choking back tears as he spoke to an estimated 200,000 supporters, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said there was no excuse for hunger among any of Brazil's estimated 50 million poor.

Brazil has had many elected leftist presidents since the last unelected leftist dictator left power.
The liberals (Democrats) in the US don't get it. Distribute the wealth make everyone equal, will not work, never has worked, never will work.
I shudder to think of the 'solutions' he's going to unveil.

Does he mean give government land to the poor, or take land from big landowners and give it to the poor? It is probably a guarantee that he WILL NOT get the government out of the way of entrepreneurs and businesspeople, which is always the key to a successful economy.
