Why Win If You're Going to Wimp Out? (Rush Limbaugh asks Republicans)

Why Win If You're Going to Wimp Out?

January 2, 2003

There is no reason for going soft on the Bush agenda, yet we're doing that more and more on everything from ending racial discrimination (aka: affirmative action) to tax fairness to Saddam. If we'd already dealt with him, we wouldn't be faced with this supposed dilemma over whether North Korea or Iraq should be our primary focus. It's not a dilemma, anyway. They're both going to be dealt with, so there's no reason to create these openings.

Reuters reports that President Bush plans to unveil an economic stimulus package expected to reach up to $300 billion, including "targeted" tax cuts, but only a 50% cut in taxes on corporate dividends to shareholders. The original proposal was to eliminate them, because it's immoral to tax earnings twice. It's double taxation. It's ridiculous. For crying out loud, why do you win the White House and Senate if you're only going to water down your agenda?

I love this administration when it comes to foreign policy and protecting us from terrorism, but I continue to scratch my head over some of this on the domestic side. If this Reuters story isn't just wishful thinking, the White House is going to shelve tax cuts because they fear the Democratic lie that it's "for the rich." They don't have the sand to go out there and cite the IRS figures we have on this site, proving that only the rich are paying income taxes.

Who are "the rich," anyway? It used to be millionaires. Today it's any family that earns $100,000 a year - and we have multimillionaires like Kerry and Edwards and Rockefeller and Kennedy saying, "I have my wealth, so I don't favor a wealth tax, but I'm going to tax income so you can't get wealthy."

The White House is also said to be staying out of the Supreme Court case of a woman kept out of the University of Michigan because of her skin color: white. Admission based on race is wrong, but the administration fears taking the woman's side because it would damage White House counsel Alberto Gonzales' Supreme Court confirmation.

They're also ready to extend unemployment insurance yet again – which means paying people not to work by taking the money from those of us who are working. Folks, the Democrats are going to criticize us no matter what we do. It's absurd to back down on our agenda. As Senator Mitch McConnell told me in our upcoming Limbaugh Letter interview, the Senate only has six months to get things done. The Democrats want to bottle things up so they can have issues. Why help them out?

You mean the President has finally figured out that there are problems in the economy?

Now if knocking out Saddam would end 'the war on terrorism' and end the need for the 'Department of Home Defense' that would be a crowd pleaser and be a boost to the economy. However I suspect that ending Saddam will not end the 'war on terrorism' hence, then ending Saddam is some kind of a fakeroo and the economy is more likely to get worse than better.

Look past the media's attempt to ruin the economic recovery with every bit of gloom they can manipulate, the economy is getting better, it has been for awhile. If not for what the Bush Administration has done already the the Clinton recession would have been much worse. Do you really think Bush did not know the economy existed?

You believe a tax cut will hurt the economy? U need a lesson in factually presented ECON100, not the dim "lies-a'plenty" version.

A tax cut would be great for the economy if it included social security, sales and property taxes coupled with a decrease in the size of government. Passing government costs unto the next generation and paying interest on borrowings is not what I hope you have in mind. There is a war to be paid for. Let's all sacrifice.

The Bush administration has misinterpreted the axiom, "That government is best which governs least," to mean, "that government is best which abdicates, appeases, and avoids confrontation. As RL says, the Democrats are going to criticize whatever you do. If you're going to be hung anyway, might as well be hung for doing what you believe and what you were elected to do.

Wrongo. A tax cut WILL be great for the economy PERIOD.

Oh, and you outed yourself. Your bogus and self-satisfied call to "sacrifice" is one hundred percent liberal handbook.

What worries me more about that is not what the Democrats are saying, but what it's causing amongst the Republican and conservative ranks.

The Lott situation was, and may or may not still be, on the brink of causing a deep fissure in conservative circles. A whole lot of people on our side saw self-serving grandstanding by certain elements of the conservative movement. The notion that it was never about Lott, but rather about tarring every Republican and conservative as a Ku Klux Klansman in the Robert Byrd mold, was not recognized immediately by as many people as it should have been.

You need to ask what Bush had done to help the economic recovery? Where have you been? The first thing is the mere fact that the people know that there's a man in the Oval Office who cares more about the interest of this nation than his own personal gain is a great boost to the economy! And providing the country with national security which was previously decimated by the previous administration has helped the economy. Take a history lesson from the 80's, it's time to excellerate the tax cuts. It's time to do away with a large part of business and corporate tax, we know this cost is just passed along to the consumer in higher prices for goods and services and reflected in wages paid.
