Newspaper Publishes Names and Addresses of CCW Holders
Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star ^

Posted on 01/05/2003 6:38:23 PM PST by Mortimer Snavely

Phil Van Cleave, head honcho of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Inc., just e-mailed this:

"The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star is publishing a list of area residents who have concealed handgun permits.

Great idea Free Lance - let's tell all the criminals which houses to burgle in order to get some guns! Great service to the community.

Maybe the editor and senior people at the Free Lance should publish their personal home addresses so that they, too, can spend quality time with some of those cuddly little felons.

Here is the link:

Weapons Permits

If you find publishing CHP holder's names and addresses to be a pretty stupid idea and to be endangering of the citizens of Virginia, let them know about it. Just because they have the right to publish public information does not necessarily make it the smart or correct thing to do:

This needs to be protested in the strongest terms legally feasible.

Someone could publish the names and addresses of all employees of the newspapers, and legislators who voted to make the info public.

There is enormous financial liability in this extraordinarily foolish move. Can anyone tell me the politics of this newspaper? Do I need to ask?

this is too much.......unflippin believable

I'd sue the paper for INTENTIONALLY PREMEDIATEDLY
targeting my life, my families life when all I
did was follow the law book chapter and verse

Then I'd scream to every venue possible how
a newspaper used it's ink to attack the constitution
and her citizens. There can be no doubt this paper
believes criminals have more rights than law abiders

Congratulations to all those with CCW's in Virginia.

Now I'm thinking I'll join the rush and get one for myself.

All it will take is ONE incident that can be construed as a result of this, and someone will own a local newspaper.

Uproar from anyone is foolish. Anytime you "register" something with the government, you should expect it to be a "public" record, since the government is "public."

Same with your credit or medical records. Either through blunder or plunder, the bureaucrats will sell you out. This is why I didn't give them my fingerprint when I got my license.

I had seriously considered getting a CCW permit till I saw this. Now I doubt I ever will.

Just like I don't pay dues to the NRA because I don't think I should have to join a listing of a group to defend my natural rights.

OTOH, maybe this listing gives crooks pause to entering, just like the home alarm signs do (or don't.)

Well, at least now the perps will know who NOT to attack or burglarize......(JOKE!).....seriously, I think those who do NOT carry should be worried. Did THIS joke of a newspaper ever think of that? Those who have CCW usually are CARRYING it, aren't they? Not just leaving it lying around the house when they are out and about?

Just publish the name, phone #, and address of the publisher, editor and reporter. Throw in the address of their kids at college.

It will never happen again.

I'd sue the paper for INTENTIONALLY PREMEDIATEDLY targeting my life,

Whatever that is...I'm not aware of any "premediation" statute?

BTW, you could sue a paper for libel, but the first defense for libel is the truth, and if these folks do hold CCW's and the list is accurate public info, the paper cannot be held liable for anything untoward.

The more I think about it, I like the idea of the publicity. More the merrier. Dare a burglar!

Actually, it lets the burgulars which houses will be easy pickins', if the owner is not on the list.

Many states require pistol purchase permits which are considered public records and published in the newspaper with Marriage Licences and Deed Transfers and etc.

I live in one.

I don't agree with it, but it has continued unchallenged for many moons.

I can't imagine what it would take to change it especially since permits themselves don't pass the test of Constitutionality, in my humble opinion.

Best regards,
