Does it not strike people odd that this story came out ONLY when the press was sure Algore would not run again? Did "60 Minutes" hold back on information they had years ago?
Maybe this has something to do with Gore's decision not to run again?
1)Gore has three daughters, two of whom I believe were too old to deserve SS protection for at least the latter part of Gore's Veep term, if not the entire term.
2) It does appear that it's Karenna, the oldest and most arrogant, juding from a cursory Google search that shows she spent some time in Spain while Daddy was Veep.
3) Check this out:
The Vice President praised the roles of Senator Graham and Ambassador Gardner in the Council. The Vice President in turn welcomed Spain's Foreign Minister Abel Matutes and referred to his meeting with President Aznar in May 1996, at which time they both expressed their interest in the role that an organization like the United States-Spain Council could perform in improving relations between the United States and Spain. He praised the commitment and effort of the Council in pursuing initiatives in diplomacy, government, business, culture, and education. Mr. Gore said that Spain and the United States are also working together to build a stronger NATO in the face of the new realities of Europe. To this effect, Spain has emerged as a shining example for other countries in Central Europe. This certainly allows for at least an appearance of possible impropriety on Karenna's part.In the educational field, he referred to the important initiatives in scientific and technological co-operation inaugurated this year, and to the continued support for Fulbright scholarships, and other joint Spain-United States programs which have raised $1 million for graduate studies in the U.S. The Vice President's own family has benefitted from close relations with Spain through his daughter Karenna, who has recently spent a year studying in Spain.
He concluded his remarks emphasizing that U.S.-Spanish relations are now excellent and quoting José María Pemán: "No hay virtud mas eminente que el hacer sencillamente lo que tenemos que hacer." - "There is no better virtue than simply doing what we have to do".
Foreign Minister Matutes expressed his appreciation to Vice President Gore for his participation in the opening session of the meeting.
4) The CIA did not want to do this. She had no legal right whatsoever to the extra goodies she was given, if any. (It's hard to tell from the article whether or not the illegal goodies were actually provided.)
5) The article makes it clear that Al and Karenna both VIOLATED FEDERAL LAW:
...then - vice president had instructed CIA director John Deutch NOT to notify Congress that the agency was covertly helping to protect Mr. Gore's daughter while she lived in Spain and worked as a reporter for a Madrid newspaper. Federal law REQUIRES the agency to provide congressional notification on all covert operations, but at Mr. Gore's insistence refused for months to tell key ranking members of the House and Senate intelligence committees. He and Karenna should be facing jail time for this.
