Internal investigations find that except for screwed up communications, all is well with the LEO's regarding the dog shooting.

Officer Hall, the LEO who shot the dog, has been reassigned to an administrative position pending the outcome of an independent investigation by a private out-of-state investigator.

Its been shown that the LEOs can't really police themselves. I think drawing and quartering an appropriate punishment for the dog shooter but then again I like dogs more than cops.

Tennessee's infamous "good 'ol boy" network will protect Officer Hall...he'll be back on the road in no time. Tourists, beware. Hall should be FIRED, along with that worthless police chief. If Hall is worried about being bit by a dog, he might want to check into a new line of work...I'm sure McDonald's is hiring.

A police chief in Gaithersburg, Md., will conduct an independent investigation.

The outcome of the internal "investigation" is not unexpected. Normally I don't root for trial lawyers but would make an exception here. A trial the only way to bring these facts to public scrutiny. I hope they get the best lawyer they can find.

Unfortunately, the state will probably settle to avoid further embarrassment.

Even so, the THP officers did not act inappropriately by making the felony stop, according to an internal investigation.

Next they will say that anyone who would question anything any LEO would do is desecrating the graves of the FDNY and NYPD heroes who died on September 11, 2001.

Anti-Terror Uber Alles.

Somebody needs their @ss whooped for this blunder, the problem is who? The cops were doing mostly what they were suppose to do, I haven't seen the pictures or film in anyway so I can't say that from the cops point of view they weren't thieves who might have been dangerous as well as their dog being vicious. All I do know is that I would be pissed that me and my family were handcuffed and thrown to the ground for no reason as well as my dog being killed for no reason. Again I say somebody needs their @ss whooped, what a shame.

Yep, the police have completely excused themselves for everything they did. Why am I not assured?

The sad truth is they were doing their jobs more or less flawlessly.

The sadder truth is unless or until we collectively realize certain jobs do not need to be done we will continue to have these type of incidents.

Many families with dogs drive to Tennessee for the Ducks Unlimited Great Outdoors Festival.

Maybe we should all get bumperstickers: Officer, I'm a tourist traveling with my family to the Great Outdoors Festival. Please don't shoot my dog.

Best regards,

3:05 The dog appears.
3:07 The dog is shot.

As the cop you have just made a felony stop.
For all you know you have a car full of bank robbers.
A dog exits the car snarling.

Ya got 2 seconds.......what are you going to do?

You people all make great Monday morning quarterbacks.

***Meanwhile, the Cookeville Police Department has instigated a third-party examination of the situation. A police chief in Gaithersburg, Md., will conduct an independent investigation. ***

It was in Maryland that the FBI (assisting local LEOs following a bank robbery) made a felony stop of the wrong car and shot the fellow in the passenger seat in his face, when he reached for his seatbelt buckle, trying to comply with the order to get out of the car. They then took many minutes to call for an ambulance.

I do not have much hope for reasonable results of this investigation.

I have worried about this same scenario. I have a shepherd-mix dog who is the friendliest dog in the world, but who distinctly doesn't like guns or other threats pointed at me. If an officer thought I was a bad guy and decided to have me kneeling and cuffed with his gun out, I have no doubt as to what my dog would do. I have no doubt about what the officer would do. And that would begin a world of hurt for me because I love that dog, and would never know peace until I had revenge, which might come in a matter of seconds.

I'm thoroughly dismayed that they would react in such a way (the felony stop) when there is absolutely no proof that a crime had been committed. If I drop my wallet while walking downtown and a couple of hundred dollars falls out, a passerby tells the police that they think I might have committed a crime, do the police have the right to put me on the ground and handcuff me?

The answer, of course is "no". How about confirming with the "witness" what she saw and approach the vehicle cautiously, pull the driver out, explain the reason for the stop and question him regarding the cash.

As for the dog, the police should absolutely allowed the car doors to be closed. They were wrong and should be held fully accountable for their inaction but, I heard the owner on the radio refer to the dog as a "bulldog" and later got the impression from callers and the show host that it was a English Bulldog, now they just called him a "mixed breed bulldog" and now the police are calling him a "pitbull". Could be the cops trying to justify the senseless murder of a families pet, but I'd like to see a photo of the dog (preferably a "before" picture). If he turns out to have been a pitbull, the police were negligent in not closing the doors but now there is a very real possibility that the "family pet" was now in attack mode. Sorry, but I don't have any love or respect for Pitbulls or their owners. Flame away...

Heartbreaking...

The felony stop portion looked good and well done. The orders were calm and respectful (better than many I have seen!)

I saw three people complying fully with the officers, and telling them about the dog, and not wanting it to get out.

I saw the dog finally get out of the car (he behaved a long time!) and I saw it running around the way a dog will (adventure!) when it gets out. I didn't see anything overtly menacing about the dog's behavior or posture. This was just a loose dog.

It seems after that, they utterly failed to think on their feet.

The owners of the dog were as hysterical afterwards as I would have been.

Excuse me for noticing, but ... Where's the felony?

Someone sees something, determines that someone (with out of state plates) is "up to something", and the LEOs are justified in using deadly force?

Thank God none of the poor family members twitched a finger the wrong way, reached for a handkerchief, or did anything that might have made the LEOs feel "threatened".

Again, the LEOs are saying that this was all appropriate behavior (on their part) for a "felony arrest". Where is the felony? Suspected, alleged, or otherwise?

In the original statements made by the dad....the officer that shot the dog and another Tenn State Patrol officer were "laughing" after the dog was shot....

Their supervisor denied they did this..
.
They were pleaded with by the mom to please close the car doors so that dogs wouldnt run out onto the highway...
Again this also was ignored...

IMO this bloodthirsty individual would much prefered to have shot a living human being...and get the green light for it...poor guy had to settle for the family pet...traumatizing them all for a good long time....(at least he proved to himself that he had "what it takes" to "drop the hammer" Just no freakin common sense...and they say citizens cant be trusted to defend themselves.....sheesh

Law enforcement such as this does nothing to endear itself to the public....expect more of these kinds of things as Homeland Security turns America into a Police State...
In the Soviet Union it was once said there became two classes of citizens those in the gulag and those who guarded those in the gulag...and it was better to be a guard as you lived better...

The woman that made the call to the police needs to be prosecuted for a false police report:

She stated that the car was traveling at 110 mph.
She stated that the occupants were throwing money out the window.

Were it not for the woman making these false statements, the chain of events would not have happened.
