Son of sheriff's deputy reportedly shoots sister to death

BATTLE GROUND, Wash. (AP) -- A 10-year-old girl believed to be the daughter of a Clark County sheriff's deputy was shot to death by her brother at their home near this southwest Washington town.

The 13-year-old boy attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but was unsuccessful after a gunshot hit his sister in the head about 7:15 p.m. Monday, Sheriff's Sgt. Melanie Kenoyer said. The parents were away at the time but returned soon afterward.

Kenoyer said investigators believe the shooting was accidental.

The Columbian newspaper in Vancouver, Wash., quoted three unnamed sources familiar with the family as saying the girl and boy are the children of longtime sheriff's Sgt. Craig Randall.

Kenoyer would not discuss the identities late Monday night but said the handgun involved in the shooting had not been issued by the sheriff's office.

"We're all devastated," Kenoyer told The Columbian. "We will be trying to get the officer as much support as we can."

The news shows will be working overtime this afternoon and this evening .... There will be dozens of reporters looking for answers and the story may be in the news for several weeks .... The reporters will be pushing the Gun Contol Agenda which is an easy sell in Portland, but an extremely hard sell elsewhere in the State of Oregon. Battle Ground, Washington will also be up in arms over this tragic story and the debate will get pretty intense.

I can see the typical responce coming,
Blame the gun not the owner who does not keep it secured.
Sheriff's daugter no less too, don't suppose he will be charged any thing tho'
So sad for the family, can't imagine how the boy feels.

No gun should ever be handled in such a manner as it intersects the plane of a human or animal unless that human or animal is something the gun handler has decided to kill. When I was a kid, before I was allowed to pick up a gun for the first time, I learned this important lesson. I learned to respect guns. Handled properly they can't hurt someone.

There is no such thing as an unloaded weapon. A gun should always be treated as if it were loaded, ready to be fired and might go off at any second.

Even as adults some people who have been around guns their entire lives don't know this lesson.

I have had people ask me if I wanted to look at their gun collection. While I sat there, this individual would wave their guy around disecting human bodies with the extended barrel line of their gun. I have had to stand up and leave such presentations due to my inability to talk common sense into them.

If you teach kids or even adults nothing more than this one tactic, they will never kill a friend or family member by accident.

One of my brothers used to invite a friend to go to the range with us. His friend waved his gun around all the time. Frequently the gun was momentarily pointed at one or the other of us. I don't go shooting with my brother anymore. If you value your life, or the lives of people or animals who matter to you, never tollerate this type of behavior. Get yourself and anyone or anything that matters to you, as far away from the person that does this as you can.

I wouldn't be surprised if the kid thought he was going to be smart and dry fire his weapon at his sister as a joke. Unfortunately the gun was loaded. I hate to read stories like this. The life of the kid and that of his folks and their friends will never be the same. What a terrible terrible tragedy.

Presently, the gun grabbers somehow don't think their laws should apply to police officers. Will a story such as this one change that? Doubtful: Their intention is to disarm civilians, not reduce gun deaths.

While police have confirmed the gun involved belongs to someone inside the home, they have not disclosed who it is registered to.

Registered? Not in Oregon.

My husband received two guns as a gift for Christmas..... knowing, positively that they were not loaded, we still stressed to both of our children (16 and 11) that you never aim at anyone unless you plan to shoot them.......... They "aimed" at the tv........

This is tragic.....no words can express enough sorrow for this family

"unregistered" is for shock value... liberalspeak...

very similar to "semi-automatic, assault rifle" which is applied to any lever action .22 caliber sporting gun with a scope... or without.

"Unregistered" makes folks thing "oooooh.. so THIS was an UNREGISTERED FIREARM... see, if we enforced registration laws, this EVIL, UNREGISTERED GUN would not have killed this little girl..." Alas... registration is the solution.

When all along, NOT letting kids have access to firearms without your training and supervision is the key. DAD the cop... greiving though he may be... is an idiot. You don't leave loaded weapons unlocked and accessible to kids. EVER.

He was further stupid for not teaching his kids the rules by EXPERIENCE... as in taking them out shooting. ANYTHING you put in front of the barrel, even if you think or KNOW it's NOT loaded... should be considered DEAD. Your cat, cow or left foot.

Never touch the trigger until you are ready to kill... and so on. Our cops out here are not known for their intelligence. One rather well known freeperlady told me her oregon cops are not required to go out shooting once a year... and so they don't...

God HELP us, WE ARE IN THE HANDS OF THE IDIOTS...
Not far back, the oregon cops, killed one of their own on a swat training drill... a NON LIVE FIRE DRILL... where one of the rounds was hot... Cops should know better.

Two of our deputies sherrifs (I believe) in a community east of Portland proper, were found to be sexing with the minor girls in the neighborhood, about the same time that the TWO girls amanda and ashley, were first thought to be the victims of foul play.

Oregon is state of moronic, tree hugging, toad licking, liberal socialist GAYCOP promoting, radicals. GOD help us.

Sum up the general state of oregon's mental prowess in two words or less? VERA KATZ

I don't like the headline the reporter gave this story! When I read "shoots to death" it appears to me to be done purposely......this was an accidental shooting - and the headline should have said so!!

Actually news this evening is that it may NOT have been and accident at all. There is going to be an autopsy to determine that... the boy was thirteen or older... fwiw... that's what we are getting now at the top of the hour reports...

The gun was reportedly, on a very high shelf, beyond the reach of the older kid... and it is being implied that he had to use something rather quickly in order to remove it from it's "safe" place, in mom and dad's bedroom, which is apparently suspicious to investigators...

The parents left them alone but for a few moments according to the radio station announcer... so the boy would have had to gone for the gun in a shorter period of time.... but that is just newsroom headline scuttlebut.

Sometimes kids of cops, like preachers kids, flip out for no apparent reason... One thing is for sure this whole story will be distorted every which way before the truth finally comes out.

Crazy times we live in.
Terrorists are our "friends" and allies.
Islam is PEACE.

And folks who KNOW better are doing the craziest things.

I realize we never know what goes in in someone else's home, but don't you think it is unlikely that this boy killed his sister on purpose? Large family, law-abiding Dad in the home, and a friend over........ a witness......

I think it is much more likely that the kid ran in there as soon as Mom and Dad were gone to SHOW his friend the gun..... showing off, as 13 year old boys do, it fired and accidently struck the sister......

Let me see;

We have had legal abortion for 30 years.

Marriage is 'throw away' just like everything else in this country.

Our public school system is a failure. Kids are just passed along even though they may be failing. Inner city schools are even worse, with drug dealing, sex in the schools and low attendance rates. I can say this because in my city only 55% of the kids enrolled in high school attend, the city has been in the state of 'academic emergency' for years. Middle school teachers tell me that at any given time they have about a dozen pregnant middle school girls. Not only have we had complaints about teachers engaging in sex in the schools, we have security video tape of middle school kids having sex in the schools. DURING SCHOOL. One of our high school teachers, who was a city councilman, and once led kids in a small 'riot' against us is currently under indictment for smoking pot with students and having sex with underage high school girls.

This has been going on since I was in school in California in the 60's.

College now seems to be an indoctrination for liberal ideology and feel good politics rather than learning. Not to mention the party attitude.

On television our kids are filled with a steady diet of violence and hedonism.

Religion is nothing more than lip service to most of us today. Situation ethics is the rule of the day.

The President of the United States has affairs in the White House, lies on the stand and gets away with it.

And now we wonder why the police are so screwed up?

In this day and age, don't expect more from police officers coming on the job, look what they're coming from.

Sorry, had to jump on a little soap box.

Thank you for your informative post. When I was about thirteen years old I used to sneek off you friends and go quail hunting. The other two boys were out hunting all the time and the older boy was quite a good hunter and very careful where he pointed his weapon. He was always talking about handling the shotgun properly. The younger boy, I will call him Henry, had what I figured was a smirky attitude. One day I went over to the house to go hunting, and only the younger boy was there. Reluctantly, I went along.

We went down through an orchard that day, and Henry kept his gun under good control until we reached an old fence. We had to climb through the fence. I was very careful to stay wide of Henry, but he pointed the weapon at me for a moment. I ducked out of the way and moved quickly back. At that moment, Henry dropped his weapon against the fence, and it discharged. Scared the crap out of me, and my ears rang for about a half-hour it seemed.

Needless to say, I left to go home as soon as I calmed down. Never snuck off to go hunting again. Later, I joined an NRA sponsored shooting club and learned what an idiot I had been for sneaking off that way. Actually, I became a pretty good rifle shot.

Agree with you 199%! But this is the Oregonian and we have to live with that lousy newspaper. Once in a while, one of their reporters actually does a really great piece of reporting. Most of the time, the paper is just reprints Washington Post and NYT stories on front page. In my private view, the political reporters are way too cose to Vera Katz.

By the way, the Oregonian's web site is the worse site for a major metropolitan newspaper I have ever seen. Mainly, it is a site for the presentation of advertising and to access movie times in local theaters.
