49ers release Mariucci from final year of contract
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com
Steve Mariucci is out as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
49ers general manager Terry Donahue told ESPN.com's John Clayton today that Mariucci has been released from the final year of his contract and no longer is the team's head coach.
Sources told Clayton that there were philosophical differences between Mariucci and John York, the owner's representative, about Mariucci's role within the organization. Sources said that Mariucci had been asking for the title of vice president of football operations.
Former Vikings coach Dennis Green and 49ers defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. might be candidates to replace Mariucci.
The 49ers' season ended on a disappointing note with a 31-6 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday in the NFC divisional playoffs.
After Sunday's loss, York reiterated that the 49ers wanted Mariucci to return for the 2003 season. At the time, Mariucci was also adamant that he wants to coach the team next season -- even if the two sides could not agree on an extension.

Mooch is great -- he won't have any trouble finding a new gig. I cannot believe the Niners are even considering choke-king Dennis Green!

The 49ers were just not a very good football team this year. There were similar to the Packers who managed a good record and to make the playoffs but neither team was very good.
Dennis Green is poison. Any team that hires him deserves what it gets. I'm glad he's gone from Minnesota.

The Whiners have a history of dismissing people as if they were cheap motel bed sheets.

I couldn't believe they let the clock run down with 30 seconds left in the half, two timeouts and the ball on the 40 yard line.

Dennis Green! If the Niners hire him I will have to find another team. He is nothing but a whiner and race baiter. Say it ain't so Joe.

BUMMER(For those who don't recall, that was his quote when it was explained to him that the Refs made an error and that's why they beat the Giants.)

The team hasn't been the same since Walsh retired.
There's no substitute for genius.

I hope S.F. signs Denny Green. It'll make continuing to despise them that much easier.

They HAVE to consider Dennis Greene, per the agreement b/w the NFL and Johnny "OJ is innocent because Mark Furhman said nigger" Cochran.

I nominate Mariucci for DC of the New York Football Giants.

Who is drafting & signing the 49ers' defensive players? That is the person that needs to go. The 49ers are like the Colts & Packers, good offense, non-existent defense.

Interesting. I saw Walsh interviewed after the game and he flat out state that Mariuchi would be back, that the speculation was ridiculous, that it would be crazy(paraphrasing) to fire him. Might have been better to issue a polite form of no comment, than for Walsh to wag his finger.
Good, Mariuchi can do better with other teams. Here's hoping T. Owens and the Forty-Whiners tank hard and fast.

3 coaches in about 20 years is much turnover versus other teams.

The 49ers were just not a very good football team this year. Injuries aside, they need some help at DB, O-line, D-line, and wide reciever. Now a head coach.
