JERUSALEM - The Israeli navy blew up a raft laden with explosives found floating in the sea off the Gaza Strip Friday, in an explosion which the hardline Islamic group Hamas said killed one of its militants.

A naval gunboat came across the raft floating four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the shore, on a level with the Jewish settlement of Dugit in the north of the Gaza Strip, the army said.

The raft, which the army said was unmanned, blew up when it was shelled.

A Hamas official said on condition of anonymity that Mahmud Yassin al-Jumasi, a member of the group's military wing the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades, was killed "carrying out an operation on a boat."

There was no independent confirmation that anyone had died in the incident.

In other incidents, the army arrested nine Palestinians before dawn Friday in the West Bank, a military spokesman said.

Three of them, seized in Bethlehem, Tulkarem and Ramallah's al-Amari refugee camp, were wanted for anti-Israeli attacks, the spokesman said.

The remaining six were taken for questioning in the village of Dura in the south of the West Bank.

According to military sources, five Palestinians out of 70 made prisoner in the West Bank in recent days were preparing to carry out suicide attacks.
